This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Combinatorial Optimization, ISCO 2014, held in Lisbon, Portugal, in March 2014. The 37 revised full papers presented together with 64 short papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 97 submissions. They present original research on all aspects of combinatorial optimization, such as algorithms and complexity; mathematical programming; operations research; stochastic optimization; graphs and combinatorics.

UMTS Radio Network Planning: Mastering Cell Coupling for Capacity Optimization

The author establishes a concise system model for UMTS radio networks, which describes interference coupling and its impact on the network. This model is the basis for efficient radio network performance analysis as well as new optimization methods for automatic planning.

Operations Research Proceedings 2018

This book gathers a selection of peer-reviewed papers presented at the International Conference on Operations Research (OR 2018), which was held at the Free University of Brussels, Belgium on September 12 - 14, 2018, and was jointly organized by the German Operations Research Society (GOR) and the Belgian Operational Research Society (ORBEL). 575 scientists, practitioners and students from mathematics, computer science, business/economics and related fields attended the conference and presented more than 400 papers in parallel topic streams, as well as special award sessions. The respective papers discuss classical mathematical optimization, statistics and simulation techniques. These are complemented by computer science methods, and by tools for processing data, designing and implementing information systems. The book also examines recent advances in information technology, which allow big data volumes to be processed and enable real-time predictive and prescriptive business analytics to drive decisions and actions. Lastly, it includes problems modeled and treated while taking into account uncertainty, risk management, behavioral issues, etc.

"This book deals with a simple sounding question whether a certain amount of gas can be transported by a given pipeline network. While well studied for a single pipeline, this question gets extremely difficult if we consider a meshed nation wide gas transportation network, taking into account all the technical details and discrete decisions, as well as regulations, contracts, and varying demand. This book describes several mathematical models to answer these questions, discusses their merits and disadvantages, explains the necessary technical and regulatory background, and shows how to solve this question using sophisticated mathematical optimization algorithms."--

Studies on integer optimization in emergency management have attracted engineers and scientists from various disciplines such as management, mathematics, computer science, and other fields. Although there are a large number of literature reports on integer planning and emergency events, few books systematically explain the combination of the two. Researchers need a clear and thorough presentation of the theory and application of integer programming methods for emergency management. Integer Optimization and its Computation in Emergency Management investigates the computation theory of integer optimization, developing integer programming methods for emergency management and explores related pr...

Gas Network Optimization by MINLP

This thesis is about mathematical optimization for an efficient operation of gas transmission networks. The challenging question is how to expand and operate the network in order to facilitate the transportation of specified gas quantities at minimum cost. This problem is a major challenge for gas network operators. It is extremely hard to solve due to the combinatorial complexity of the active network elements such as compressors, the nonlinear physical characteristic of pipelines, and the immense sizes of the problem instances. Mathematical models and optimization techniques can result in huge gains for the network operators in terms of cost reductions and automated computations. We tackle this challenge by developing novel mathematical theory and associated innovative optimization algorithms for large scale instances. This allows us to produce solutions for a real-world instance, i.e., the largest gas network in Germany.

Numerous studies indicate an accelerated growth of forest trees, induced by ongoing climate change. Similar trends were recently found for urban trees in major cities worldwide. Studies frequently report about substantial effects of climate change and the urban heat island effect (UHI) on plant growth. The combined effects of increasing temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and extended growing season lengths, in addition to increasing nitrogen deposition and higher CO2 concentrations, can increase but also reduce plant growth. Closely related to this, the multiple functions and services provided by urban trees may be modified. Urban trees generate numerous ecosystem services, inclu...
