Drug Resistance in Leukemia &

The last ten years have seen the publication of a vast amount of data regarding cellular resistance to drugs in cancer cells. Recent studies have demonstrated that drug resistance assays appear to be predictive of clinical response and suggest that clinicians should now be considering the potential applications of these assays in the treatment of patients with hematological neoplasms. This collection of papers from the International Symposium on the Clinical Value of Drug Resistance Assays in Leukemia and Lymphoma, Amsterdam, 1992, provides a state-of-the-art discussion on drug resistance assays and their role in the design and individualization of treatment protocols.

An invaluable aid for professional scientists and students in diagnostic haematology laboratories and teaching institutions. Uniquely designed for use beside the microscope, this atlas describes the subtle changes which differentiate and allow recognition of haemopoietic cells during normal development and then presents in full colour the features which lead to the diagnosis of blood disorders. All common and virtually all rare disorders are magnificently portrayed.

Normal, Transformed and Leukemic Leukocytes

The scanning electron microscope (SEM) has been used with increasing frequency in recent years to study the surface mor phology of normal, transformed and malignant leukocytes. Since the original reports on critical point-dried lymphocytes published in 1973, results of other studies using improved methods have been reported giving rise to some controversy in this field and this is discussed in the text of the atlas. Advances in preparatory techniques recorded during the past 3 years have also contributed much to a better understanding of cell surface phenomena as seen under the SEM. The text of the atlas traces the developments in this field chronologically, summarizes the available literature and presents the current situation in the light of the most recent studies in this field. The photographs were selected to illustrate the spectrum of surface morphology of the different cell types obtained from normal individuals and patients with disease states. Hopefully, the atlas will serve as a guide for future studies and as an illustration of what SEM has to offer in providing details of surface architecture.

Details the way that chemotherapy should be administered to patients with hemato-oncological disorders and deals with the essentials of practice. Includes an alphabetical list of all drugs used in practice, providing dosages, side-effects, mechanisms and complications in a tabular format. Many of the conventional chemotherapy regimens are listed with their timing schedules, and additional newer protocols of drug use are also included. Essential references relating to the drugs and specific regimens are provided. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

This volume provides detailed, yet concise, information about clinical presentations and current therapy for acute leukemia, both myelogenous and lymphocytic. Newer trends, including biological response modifiers, are discussed at length and a chapter is devoted to the role of bone marrow transplantation in the management of patients with acute leukemia. Comprehensive referencing is provided and specific therapeutic regimens are provided with the expectation that these may prove useful to the reader. Diagnosis and Therapy of Acute Leukemia in Adults will provide very helpful information for trainees and specialists treating patients with leukemia and can also be used as a practical guide for all medical staff, both senior and junior. In addition this book will be useful to professional pharmacists and specialist nursing staff dealing with the management of patients with acute leukemia within both hospital and out-patient facilities.

"Lung Cancer: A Practical Guide to Management" is a straightforward introduction to this disease. It's aetiology, pathology and all aspects of routine management, as well as rarer conditions like bronchial carcinoid tumor and malignant mesothelioma, are covered clearly and concisely. It is based firmly on the author's own experience and management policies. Lung cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK and is an increasingly common tumor in women. Most health professionals will therefore meet patients with this problem from time to time throughout their career.

This textbook integrates basic research and clinical aspects underlying the most recent results in those malignant diseases where progress is most effective. Recent evidence shows that higher doses are better in inducing higher cure rates in hematological neoplasias, although myeloblation related to dose intensity can be a limiting factor. The toxicity can now be controlled with autologous marrow and peripheral blood progenitor cell transplantation, used with or without growth factors. The combination of high dose chemoradiotherapy followed by re-infusion of autologous stem cells constitute a dramatic advance in the treatment of refactory and relapse hematological neoplasias.
