Trauma dan Rekonsiliasi Perempuan Melawan Patriarki, Taliban dan Poligami
Upaya-upaya rekonsiliasi tersebut menjadi sebuah cara bagi Mariam dan Laila untuk berdamai dengan segala traumanya meskipun berdasarkan analisis yang telah dilakukan tidak semua traumanya pada akhirnya dapat diterima atau dengan kata lain dimaafkan dan dilupakan sepenuhnya. Trauma yang didukung adanya sesama penyintas trauma lain dalam hal yang sama mampu mempengaruhi dan mengisi pola pikir serta tindakan satu sama lain. Mariam yang awalnya memiliki karakter lemah pada akhirnya mampu menggerakkan dirinya untuk melakukan sebuah aksi heroik yang menjadi sebuah death drive baginya. Sedangkan trauma yang dialami Laila, tidak semua traumanya dapat dikategorikan telah berhasil dipulihkan melalui upaya-upaya rekonsiliasinya. Dengan kata lain, masih terdapat beberapa trauma yang sulit diterima oleh Laila dan tidak dapat dimaafkannya. Upaya rekonsiliasi sebagai proses penyembuhan trauma yang dilakukan Mariam dan Laila bertujuan untuk mengakhiri konflik yang dialaminya, dalam hal ini yaitu konflik batin atas trauma-trauma yang dialami kedua tokoh utama dalam karya Hosseini ini
