Reaching Outward and Upward

As the year 2013 and the fiftieth anniversary of the University of Victoria approaches, Ian MacPherson offers a comprehensive history of one of Canada's most progressive and visually beautiful campuses. A reflection on the people, history, and legacy of UVic - once known as Victoria College, a satellite of McGill University - Reaching Outward and Upward brings five decades of learning to life. From its beginnings in 1963, serving a mere handful of students in a hastily developed site, UVic has grown to become one of Canada's leading universities serving over 20,000 students on one of Canada's most stunning university campuses. Ian MacPherson examines how this transformation took place despit...

The biggest science story of our time, Massive spans four decades, weaving together the personal narratives and international rivalries behind the search for the "God" particle, or Higgs boson. A story of grand ambition, intense competition, clashing egos, and occasionally spectacular failures, Massive is the first book that reveals the science, culture, and politics behind the biggest unanswered question in modern physics -- what gives things mass? Drawing upon his unprecedented access to Peter Higgs, after whom the particle is named, award-winning science writer Ian Sample chronicles the multinational and multibillion-dollar quest to solve the mystery of mass. For scientists, to find the God particle is to finally understand the origin of mass, and until now, the story of their search has never been told.

A collection of lectures from eight authoritative speakers, High Energy Phenomenology is a concise introduction for postgraduates new to the field and provides a comprehensive overview of important research activities, results, and future directions for existing researchers. Coverage includes Ian Aitchison's introduction of standard model foundations, HERA physics, the physics and experimental challenges of future hadron colliders, and particle physics and cosmology. The book concludes with Alain Blondel's chapter on precision tests of the standard electroweak model at LEP.

Techniques and Concepts of High-Energy Physics III

The third Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics was held at the Hotel on the Cay, in the scenic harbor of Christiansted, St. Croix, U. S. Virgin Islands. Christiansted was the site of the first ASI, and it was certainly a delight to return there again. As in the previous ASI's, the aim was to bring together a small group of promising young experimenters and several outstanding senior scholars in experimental and theoretical high energy physics in order to learn about the latest developments in the field and to strengthen contacts among scientists from different countries and different backgrounds. The institute was both a great scientific and a grea...

Story of the W and Z

This is a first-hand account of one of the most important scientific discoveries of the twentieth century. In 1983, two groups of scientists working at CERN near Geneva collected data, which were subsequently shown to be consistent with the W and Z bosons. This work earned two of those scientists the 1984 Nobel Prize in Physics. The author of this book, Peter Watkins, was a member of one of those groups. His book opens with a brief statement of the background, explaining in non-technical terms the theoretical developments that led to the prediction in the late 1960s of the existence of the W and Z bosons. He then moves on rapidly to describe the background to the experiments, explaining as he does so the problems that had to be overcome, and giving details of the accelerators, detectors and computers used in these very advanced- and difficult- experiments.

Reviews Of Accelerator Science And Technology - Volume 8: Accelerator Applications In Energy And Security

As accelerator science and technology progressed over the past several decades, the accelerators themselves have undergone major improvements in multiple performance factors: beam energy, beam power, and beam brightness. As a consequence, accelerators have found applications in a wide range of fields in our life and in our society. The current volume is dedicated to applications in energy and security, two of the most important and urgent topics in today's world. This volume makes an effort to provide a review as complete and up to date as possible of this broad and challenging subject. It contains overviews on each of the two topics and a series of articles for in-depth discussions including heavy ion accelerator driven inertial fusion, linear accelerator-based ADS systems, circular accelerator-based ADS systems, accelerator-reactor interface, accelerators for fusion material testing, cargo inspection, proton radiography, compact neutron generators and detectors. It also has a review article on accelerator science and technology in Canada with a focus on the TRIUMF laboratory, and an article on the life of Bruno Touschek, a renowned accelerator physicist.
