Advances in Proctology and Colorectal Surgery
This Research Topic is in collaboration with Colorectal Disease Centre . Over the past few years, there have been several advancements in proctology and colorectal surgery. Consequently, the need to have a tailored treatment for each patient emerged. This revolution involved both benign (haemorrhoidal disease, anal and pilonidal fistula, diverticulitis, fecal incontinence, inflammatory bowel diseases) and malignant (colorectal cancer) disorders. In addition, translational research and targeted therapies have improved the outcome and prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer. In the present Research Topic, we are encouraging experienced colleagues to submit original research articles, case studies, and review articles regarding the main points of debate of proctology and colorectal cancer.
Constipation
The only book to deal specifically with constipation for specialists has been updated to include all the new advances since the first edition (1995). These advances include biofeedback, surgery for constipation, sacral nerve stimulation, the use of laparoscopy for rectal prolapse, treament and our understanding of some of the psychological problems of these patients. Innovations also include Professor Norman Williams’ Malone Procedure and the newer pharmacologic treatments such as nitric oxide and botulinum toxin injections.
Benign Anorectal Diseases
Three-dimensional endoanal ultrasonography with emphasis on the anatomy of the pelvic floor and diagnosis of anorectal benign diseases. Numerous schematic representations coupled with ultrasonographic and radiologic images provide a didactic approach. Anal Incontinence

Connecting Grammaticalisation
This monograph presents a view on grammaticalisation radically different from standard views centering around the cline of grammaticality. Grammar is seen as a complex sign system, and, as a consequence, grammatical change always comprises semantic change. What unites morphology, topology (word order), constructional syntax and other grammatical subsystems is their paradigmatic organisation. The traditional concept of an inflexional paradigm is generalised as the structuring principle of grammar. Grammatical change involves paradigmatic restructuring, and in the process of grammatical change morphological, topological and constructional paradigms often connect to form complex paradigms. The book introduces the concept of connecting grammaticalisation to describe the formation, restructuring and dismantling of such complex paradigms. Drawing primarily on data from Germanic, Romance and Slavic languages, the book offers both a broad general discussion of theoretical issues (part one) and three case studies (part two).
