Amino Acids, Proteins and Cancer Biochemistry

Amino Acids, Proteins, and Cancer Biochemistry focuses on the contributions of Jesse P. Greenstein to biological chemistry, including kinetics, protein mixtures, metabolism, tumors, and biosynthesis. The selection first offers information on quantitative nutritional and in vivo metabolic studies with water-soluble, chemically defined diets and internal hydrogen bonding in ribonuclease. Discussions focus on the effects of deuterium on transition temperature, kinetics of deuterium-hydrogen exchange, applications of chemically denned diets, formulation of water-soluble, chemically defined diets, and large-scale preparation of optically pure amino acids. The manuscript then examines the chromato...

The Enzymes of Biological Membranes

Much of the information currently available on the transport systems of bacterial and animal cell membranes and their mode of coupling to metabolic supply of energy can be found in this volume. Consideration of the participating enzymes dictated the choice of topics: Several transport systems where little information is available on the enzymology of the process are not included, while separate chapters deal with y-glutamyl transpeptidase and intestinal disaccharidases which meet many of the requirements of transport enzymes. The volume also includes two chapters on photosynthetic membranes as a general introduction to the topic. Other aspects of biological transport and photosynthesis will be developed in detail in a forthcoming volume now in preparation. These chapters reveal the excitement and rapid advance of the field, the daily reports of new concepts, new techniques, and new experimental findings which instantly interact to generate further progress. Our aim was to provide a starting point for those who are just beginning, and an opportunity for others to stop, take stock, and start in a new direction. My warmest thanks to all who contributed to this volume.

Metabolic Pathways, Third Edition: Volume VII: Metabolism of Sulfur Compounds deals with various aspects of the metabolism and biosynthesis of sulfur compounds such as coenzyme A, biotin, thiamine, and lipoic acid. The biochemistry of glutathione and the sulfur cycle is also discussed, together with sulfate activation and transfer; oxidative metabolism of cysteine and cystine in animal tissues; and enzyme defects in sulfur amino acid metabolism in humans. This volume is comprised of 15 chapters and begins with a discussion on the pathways of biosynthesis and dissimilation of coenzyme A, as well as the metabolic fate of exogenous coenzyme A in animals. The reader is then introduced to the che...

Bristol-Myers Cancer Symposia, Volume 9: Mechanisms of Drug Resistance in Neoplastic Cells provides information on both basic scientific and clinical studies on the causes and implications of tumor cell resistance to common antineoplastic agents. The book describes the colon cancer as a model for resistance to antineoplastic drugs; mathematical modeling of drug resistance; and the mechanism of induced gene amplification in mammalian cells. The text also discusses the cellular concomitants of multidrug resistance; resistance to alkylating agents; and the phosphoprotein and protein kinase C changes in human multidrug-resistant cancer cells. Novel drugs that affect glutathione metabolism; the r...

Advances in Enzymology and Related Areas of Molecular Biology, Volume 72, Part A

This book is Part A in a subseries entitled "Amino Acid Metabolism". Topics in Part A should be of immediate interest to those who are broadly concerned with amino acid assimilation and metabolism. Investigators interested in enzyme mechanism and regulation will also find this volume especially valuable.
