The Artist as Murderer
The 4th century BC Greek painter Parrhasius murdered his model--an old man who was his slave--to achieve, so the story goes, a more lifelike depiction of nature. The tale has inspired similar, more elaborate stories about both well known and obscure artists--including Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Rubens. Elements of the tale have appeared in theater, literature and film, as well as in comments by painters, historians, critics and anatomists. Challenging the archetype of the artist as a sympathetic lover of nature, this book examines the artist as cruel and murderous in service of art and ambition, and indirectly addresses a different understanding of the relationship between art and life.

Artist Complex
With the Jungian term of the complex the present volume inquires about the making of the artistic persona in twentieth-century photography. The articles examine photographic (self-)portraits, the dynamics between self-statements of artists and photographers, the interrelations of photography, of painting and of performance art and investigate their origins in the history of ideas. The volume traces a portrait of photography as a metascience; as preparatory work, a source of inspiration and an alternate medium in which artists could explore different subjects. "Violenza"
In Michelangelos Werk, seinem Künstlermythos und seiner Nachfolge ist Gewalt omnipräsent: als Bildthema wie als Erzählmotiv zur Veranschaulichung von Kreations- und Rezeptionsprozessen. Ausgehend von der Semantik des Begriffs "Violenza" im Sprachgebrauch des 16. Jahrhunderts, legt diese Arbeit Gewalt als zentrale Kategorie des michelangelesken Kunstdiskurses frei, die es ermöglichte, Aspekte wie Kraft, Zerstörung und kalkulierten Regelverstoß konzeptuell fassbar zu machen. Anhand zahlreicher Werk- und Textanalysen wird die Gewaltaffinität von Michelangelos sprichwörtlicher "Terribilità" ebenso beleuchtet wie die kunsttheoretischen Vorstellungen von gewaltsamer künstlerischer "Agency" im Umfeld des legendären Ausnahmekünstlers.

The visualization of power takes place until today quite significantly via visualizations of the body. Expressed pointedly: there is no power without pictures of the body. This also applies in particular to the European societies of the Middle Ages and early modern period, in which the body of the ruler was both a guarantee and a preferred projection figure for the political order. In this body, not only was power legitimized, but also constituted in the first place by means of countless documents of representation — and thus through pictures of the body in actu.This volume strives for the first time to “spell out” an “iconography of the political in action”.

Die Beiträge in diesem Band zeigen: Illegitimes Begehren wird mitunter in ambivalenten Ikonographien verborgen und kann zwischen mehreren Bedeutungshorizonten oszillieren.
