Aurora Resurgens

This book is an in dit presentation of three different texts. One discussing a Finnish sawmill in the form of a prose poem which brings the reader into a world of Sanskrit etymologies and the legend of 'The Shining Ones'. Another is a libretto for the Opera 'The Clavis Magna of Giordano Bruno'. In search of a lost text by a great Renaissance magus, the libretto offers an investigation of memory theatres, alchemy, religion and magic in the Sixteenth century: juxtaposing them against a contemporary story which closes on the cusp of the new millennium and the 400th anniversary of Bruno's burning. The third set of texts is a selection of poems, 'Running with Dogs', including 'Tangram' a seven-part work inspired by the Italian disaster at Seveso in 1976 and its aftermath. At the heart of the book is the idea that loss can be conceptualized not only in thaumaturgic terms but may also become a means of generating a redemptive alchemy of its own.

Literary Communication as Dialogue

As traced by Roger D. Sell, literary communication is a process of community-making. As long as literary authors and those responding to them respect each other’s human autonomy, literature flourishes as an enjoyable, though often challenging mode of interaction that is truly dialogical in spirit. This gives rise to author-respondent communities whose members represent existential commonalities blended together with historical differences. These heterogeneous literary communities have a larger social significance, in that they have long served as counterweights to the hegemonic tendencies of modernity, and more recently to postmodernity’s well-intentioned but restrictive politics of iden...

English Without Boundaries

This volume brings together a compendium of world-class research on English, from the Anglo-Saxons to Big Data. Selected from papers presented at the 2016 conference of the International Association of University Professors of English, the essays demonstrate the strength of English studies across the world, with contributions from scholars in China, Finland, Israel, Italy, Japan and Portugal, as well as from Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. The essays not only cross geographical boundaries, but also disciplinary ones. Contributors write about English through the prism of gender studies, history, linguistics, the digital humanities, theatre history and the history of the book; topics covered include mainstream writers such as Shakespeare and Milton, and shine light on less well-known topics such as Welsh poetry of the Wars of the Roses and captivity narratives in seventeenth-century North America. Bringing together perspectives on English from around the world, English Without Boundaries is a unique collection showing the energy and breadth of English studies today.

Literary Community-Making

The writing and reading of so-called literary texts can be seen as processes which are genuinely communicational. They lead, that is to say, to the growth of communities within which individuals acknowledge not only each other’s similarities but differences as well. In this new book, Roger D. Sell and his colleagues apply the communicational perspective to the past four centuries of literary activity in English. Paying detailed attention to texts – both canonical and non-canonical – by Amelia Lanyer, Thomas Coryate, John Boys, Pope, Coleridge, Arnold, Kipling, William Plomer, Auden, Walter Macken, Robert Kroetsch, Rudy Wiebe and Lyn Hejinian, the book shows how the communicational issues of addressivity, commonality, dialogicality and ethics have arisen in widely different historical contexts. At a metascholarly level, it suggests that the communicational criticism of literary texts has significant cultural, social and political roles to play in the post-postmodern era of rampant globalization.
