J.R.R. Tolkien's Double Worlds and Creative Process

A close colleague of Tolkein for many years, Zettersten offers here a personally informed analysis of his fiction. In light of his unusual life experience and enthusiasm for the study of languages, Zettersten finds in Tolkein's fiction the same animating passions that drove that great author as a youth, a soldier, a linguist, and an Oxford Don.

Pitkern-Norf’k

"This book tells the story of the language of the Bounty mutineers and their Polynesian consorts that developed on remote Pitcairn Island in the late 18th century. Most of their descendants subsequently relocated to Norfolk Island. Pedagogical Lexicography Today

The aim of this monograph, which has rich and evaluative annotations, is to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the issues in a major developing area of pedagogical lexicography. With this monograph researchers and students can have access to a set of 521 articles from a diverse array of publications, many in hard-to-find sources, that will prove valuable in reviewing the literature of the area. Because articles on language users and dictionary users are published in journals devoted to reading research, language acquisition, second language teaching, linguistics, and lexicography, most of the past research in the area has not shown critical awareness of this diffuse collecti...

English Words Abroad

English Words Abroad summarizes the methods developed for the innovative multilingual Dictionary of European Anglicisms (Görlach 2001, OUP) which combines data on English loanwords in sixteen European languages (four each for Germanic, Slavic, Romance and others). This summary allows us to quantify for the first time the extent of the lexical impact of loanwords on individual languages and cultures. The author discusses the elicitation of data from informants with a high linguistic awareness; criteria for inclusion; problems of integration on graphemic, phonological, morphological and semantic/stylistic levels; and speakers’ reactions (purism, language, legislation). He then explores the possibilities of applying these methods to dictionaries of gallicisms and germanisms. The book includes a survey of the most recent dictionaries of anglicisms in European languages.

Balaam's Ass: Vernacular Theology Before the English Reformation

For over seven hundred years, bodies of writing in vernacular languages served an indispensable role in the religious and intellectual culture of medieval Christian England, yet the character and extent of their importance have been insufficiently recognized. A longstanding identification of medieval western European Christianity with the Latin language and a lack of awareness about the sheer variety and quantity of vernacular religious writing from the English Middle Ages have hampered our understanding of the period, exercising a tenacious hold on much scholarship. Bringing together work across a range of disciplines, including literary study, Christian theology, social history, and the hi...
