Companies need to migrate data not only when technology needs to be replaced, but also for consolidation, load balancing, and disaster recovery (DR). Data migration is a critical operation, and this book explains the phases and steps to ensure a smooth migration. Topics range from planning and preparation to execution and validation. The book explains, from a generic standpoint, the appliance-based, storage-based, and host-based techniques that can be used to accomplish the migration. Each method is explained through practical migration scenarios and for various operating systems. This publication addresses the aspects of data migration efforts while focusing on fixed block storage systems i...

Not a new version - included warning for self signed X509 certificates - see section 5.2 This IBM® Redbooks® publication describes the concepts, architecture, and implementation of the IBM XIV® Storage System. The XIV Storage System is a scalable enterprise storage system that is based on a grid array of hardware components. It can attach to both Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP) and IP network Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) capable hosts. This system is a good fit for clients who want to be able to grow capacity without managing multiple tiers of storage. The XIV Storage System is suited for mixed or random access workloads, including online transaction processing, video streamings, ...

Implementing IBM Real-time Compression on the IBM XIV Storage System

IBM® Real-time CompressionTM is fully integrated in the IBM XIV® Storage System Gen3 with software version 11.6. Real-time Compression provides the possibility to store 2 - 5 times more data per XIV system, without additional hardware. This technology also expands the storage-replication-related bandwidth, and can significantly decrease the total cost of ownership (TCO). Using compression for replication and for volume migration with IBM Hyper-Scale Mobility is faster, and requires less bandwidth for the interlink connections between the IBM XIV storage systems, because the data that is transferred through these links is already compressed. IBM Real-time Compression uses patented IBM Random Access Compression Engine (RACE) technology, achieving field-proven compression ratios and performance with compressible data. This IBM RedpaperTM publication helps administrators understand and implement IBM Real-time Compression on the IBM XIV Gen3 storage system.

This IBM® Redpaper publication helps you design and implement a 4-site replication solution for IBM DS8000® environments. IBM Copy Services Manager is used to orchestrate the data replication and failover and failback mechanisms between the different sites. The IBM DS8000 Copy Services functions are the foundation of this 4-site replication solution. The four sites consist of two pairs of sites. Within each pair, the two sites are at metro distance, while the pairs connect at long distance over asynchronous links. The solution is based on a Multi-Target PPRC topology that consists of a Metro Mirror replication to the secondary site in the local region and a Global Mirror replication to the third site in the remote region. The fourth site is set up as a cascaded Global Copy, which is an asynchronous copy.

Multiple Target Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy (MT-PPRC) was introduced with IBM® System Storage® DS8870 Version 7 Release 4 (License Machine Code 7.7.40.xx.xx). MT-PPRC provides the capability to have two PPRC relationships on a single primary volume. With this enhancement, there can be another target available to provide additional data protection to act as a backup if a disaster occurs. This IBM RedpaperTM publication provides practical information about the characteristics and functions of the IBM DS8000® Multiple Target Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy (MT-PPRC). The paper includes scenarios that illustrate the implementation and use of different topologies, as well as enhanced migration scenarios.
