The renewed focus on the evidential base of linguistics in general, but particularly on syntax, is in to a large degree dependent on technological developments: computers, electronic storage and transmission. These factors have enabled a revolution in the accessibility of digitally stored language, both in sampled and organized corpora and in its raw unsampled form on the internet. But this technology has also allowed a step-change in experimental methods readily available to linguists. The new arrival of such enormous quantities of data in greatly increased detail has made information accessible which could previously not even have been dreamed of. This volume is a selection of research reports from linguists who are making use of this new information and trying to integrate the new insights into their analyses and theoretical assumptions.
Der Band behandelt die Schnittstelle zwischen Pragmatik, Grammatik und Psycholinguistik bzw. Neurolinguistik. Pragmatisch bedingt sind die Zurechnungen von Satzteilen zur bekannten oder zur Neuinformation im Text. Realisiert werden die pragmatischen Gliederungen aber in der Grammatik. Die theoretische Modellierung erfolgte in generativen Grammatiken, in optimalitätstheoretischen Modellen oder anhand der Alternativsemantik. Der Schwerpunkt der Untersuchung liegt auf Korrekturkonstruktionen und auf Hutkonturen. Erstere zeichnen sich durch Kontrastakzente aus und Letztere sind zweigipflig akzentuiert. Um die Prosodie weiterzuentwickeln, beschäftigt sich die Hälfte der Beiträge mit dem psycholinguistischen und neurophysiologischen Nachweis der Intonationsparameter und mit ihrer Auswertung im Kontext. Von der Kontrastintonation geht der Band dann über zur Typologie von Kontrastkonstruktionen, zu ihrem grammatischen Vergleich und ihrer textuellen Verwendung.
The architecture of the human language faculty has been one of the main foci of the linguistic research of the last half century. This volume presents new and cutting-edge research on the question of how we parse, interpret and understand language in more complex discourse settings. The challenge is to find empirical evidence on how information structure and semantic processing are related. Comprehensible answers are provided by showing how syntax, phonology, semantics and pragmatics interact and how they influence semantic processing and interpretation. The analysis of core information structural concepts that contribute to processing such as focus and contrast, the specific discourse status of referents that add to the common ground, context dependency and markedness as well as prosodic prominence and givenness marking has added new and convincing evidence to the research of information structure and semantic processing.
The work offers a new perspective on the semantics of agent-oriented manner adverbials, actions and intentionality. It proposes a treatment of these adverbials which accounts for their impact on the manner of the event as well as for their agent-orientation. The analysis is developed in a case study of German sorgfältig (‘carefully’) and vorsichtig (‘cautiously’) and makes use of the philosophical concept of action-plans. It is proposed that the modifier sorgfältig has impact on the given goal of the agent while vorsichtig introduces an additional goal of minimizing risk. The modification of the goal restricts the possible methods of realization of the action, i.e. the manner of action. The analysis makes use of Goldman’s Theory of Human Action and is spelled out in Düsseldorf Frame Theory, including extensions in the form of Cascade Theory and the semantic adaptation of models of intention from the philosophical literature. Altogether, the formalization involves a detailed representation of actions and plans, i.e. of intentionality, necessary to capture the complexity of a number of modification phenomena.

Discourse particles have often been treated as a phenomenon restricted to Germanic languages (Abraham 2020) and they still raise questions about their nature as an independent category. This book reveals that this phenomenon exists in other languages as well, and provides evidence for their nature as a separate category. The volume brings together a collection of nine papers that focus on three research topics: a) the diachronic development of discourse particles; b) their syntactic analysis; and c) the study of their semantic-pragmatics.
