What is symbolic representation? Since Hanna Pitkin’s seminal The Concept of Representation, the symbolic has been the least studied dimension of political representation. Innovatively adopting a discursive approach, this book - the first full-length treatment of symbolic representation - focuses on gender issues to tackle important questions such as: What are women and men symbols of, and how is gender constructed in policy discourse? It studies what functions symbolic representation fulfils in the construction of gender, what social roles get legitimized in policy discourse, and how this affects power constellations, ultimately revealing much about the relation between symbolic, descript...

What gender mainstreaming means in practice

  • Categories: Law

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has continuously demonstrated within its work that gender equality is not simply a matter of human rights, but is key to eliminating poverty and hunger. It is only by closing the gender gap that sustainable agriculture and rural development can reach their full potential. Consequently, FAO is committed to promoting gender equality in all of its interventions, as well as by building knowledge, identifying promising practices and widely disseminating these among member states and national partners. This publication focuses on case studies from five member countries of the European Union (EU). These illustrate how gender equality issues can be addressed in agriculture and rural development policies (including fisheries and aquaculture, forestry and livestock), programmes and practices. This publication forms part of FAO’s wider efforts to collect, analyse and disseminate promising practices on gender mainstreaming.

I'm Not Alone Anymore: Mary, My Mother, Help Me to See God's Love for Me Today

At nine years old, meningitis struck Patrick Martin, leaving him both blind and physically disabled. With the faith and help of a loving family, close friends, and others in his northern Maine town, however, he not only successfully made it through school but went on to become a Roman Catholic priest. Father Pat has spent his whole life marveling at how God has turned each of his sufferings into a gift, and in I’m Not Alone Anymore!, his sixth book, he shares the heartwarming and oftentimes humorous story of a prayer that helped take his blind eyes off himself and refocus them on others. “God called me,” he says, “to give to others what I have received.” He invites readers to join him in asking, “Mary, mother of our savior, help us to see God’s love for us today!”

A Cultural History of Comedy in the Modern Age

Drawing together contributions by scholars from a variety of fields, including theater, film and television, sociology, and visual culture, this volume explores the range and diversity of comedic performance and comic forms in the modern age. It covers a range of forms and examples from 1920 to the present day, including plays, film, television comedy, live comedy, and comedy on social media. It argues that the period covered was marked by an explosion of comic forms and a flowering of comic creativity across a range of media. From the communal watching of silent films at the start of the period, to the use of Twitter and other online platforms to share and comment on comedy, technology has ...

Cultures of Commemoration

In 1941 the Japanese military attacked the US naval base Pearl Harbor on the Hawaiian island of O‘ahu. Although much has been debated about this event and the wider American and Japanese involvement in the war, few scholars have explored the Pacific War’s impact on Pacific Islanders. Cultures of Commemoration fills this crucial gap in the historiography by advancing scholarly understanding of Pacific Islander relations with and knowledge of American and Japanese colonialisms in the twentieth century. Drawing from an extensive archival base of government, military, and popular records, Chamorro scholar Keith L Camacho traces the formation of divergent colonial and indigenous histories in ...
