Authoritarian Capitalism
During the past decade, the potential offered by Brazil's size, resources, and location has begun to be realized. There are, however, a number of international and domestic obstacles to the country's continued development, as indicated by its extreme inflation rate and its foreign indebtedness. There are also serious questions about the social and political results of the Brazilian approach to development: Brazil has become something of a test case for whether the Western, or capitalist, orientation can achieve development in more than strictly economic terms. Emphasizing key aspects of Brazil's economy, politics, and society, the authors present an overall analysis of the present system and provide a base from which to assess Brazil's future development.
The Visual Politics of War Volume Two
This second issue of the book series Visual Politics of War focuses on the implications and uncertainties associated with the ‘visual politics’ of the current media hostile environment. Over the years, academics, journalists and individuals have produced a body of work connected directly, if in complex and varied ways, to contemporary ideological beliefs. This volume draws together various scholars from different parts of the world examining facets of the new visualization of wars and crisis in a range of innovative ways. All the contributors here pose questions concerned with the significance of visual political works today, and ask how images and personas have developed and been appropriated by others with their own distinct political agendas.
State And Society In Brazil
This volume grew out of a conference series sponsored jointly by the Stanford-Berkeley Joint Center for Latin American Studies and the Instituto Universitario de Pesquisas do Rio de Janeiro (IUPERJ). Entitled "Opportunities and Constraints in Peripheral Industrial Society: The Case of Brazil," the first conference was held in Nova Friburgo in July 1983 and was followed up by another at Berkeley in late January 1984. In the course of our discussions, the subject matter widened so that a new title was chosen for this book. Also,in the interim, as Brazil made the transition to democracy and returned to economic growth, many topics on the agenda for the 1980s emerged in clearer focus, so that the chapters have all been sharpened and upgraded. In the division of labor that produced this book, Nunes coordinated the project at Berkeley and in Brazil, while Wirth and Bogenschild did the editing.
Space and Subjectivity in Contemporary Brazilian Cinema
This collection explores the emergence of new spatialities and subjectivities in Brazilian films produced from the 1990s onwards, a period that became known as the retomada, but especially in the cinema of the new millennium. The chapters take spatiality as a powerful tool that can reveal aesthetic, political, social, and historical meanings of the cinematographic image instead of considering space as just a formal element of a film. From the rich cross-fertilization of different theories and disciplines, this edited collection engages with the connection between space and subjectivity in Brazilian cinema while raising new questions concerning spatiality and subjectivity in cinema and providing new models and tools for film analysis.
