In this thesis we study the computational complexity of five NP-hard graph problems. It is widely accepted that, in general, NP-hard problems cannot be solved efficiently, that is, in polynomial time, due to many unsuccessful attempts to prove the contrary. Hence, we aim to identify properties of the inputs other than their length, that make the problem tractable or intractable. We measure these properties via parameters, mappings that assign to each input a nonnegative integer. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 11th Algorithms and Data Structures Symposium, WADS 2009, held in Banff, Canada, in August 2009. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 12th International Symposium on Experimental Algorithms, SEA 2013, held in Rome, Italy, in June 2013. Automata, Languages and Programming
The two-volume set LNCS 6755 and LNCS 6756 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 38th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages and Programming, ICALP 2011, held in Zürich, Switzerland, in July 2011. The 114 revised full papers (68 papers for track A, 29 for track B, and 17 for track C) presented together with 4 invited talks, 3 best student papers, and 3 best papers were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 398 submissions. Treewidth, Kernels, and Algorithms
This Festschrift was published in honor of Hans L. Bodlaender on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The 14 full and 5 short contributions included in this volume show the many transformative discoveries made by H.L. Bodlaender in the areas of graph algorithms, parameterized complexity, kernelization and combinatorial games. The papers are written by his former Ph.D. students and colleagues as well as by his former Ph.D. advisor, Jan van Leeuwen.
