Plant extracts are widely used for therapeutic purposes. The vegetal origin of these products satisfies people’s desire to cure themselves with natural drugs; this aspect, together with effectiveness and regulatory opportunities, is the base of the broad modern use of medicinal plants. Traditional uses and novel biological effects allow the availability of an extraordinarily high number of different compounds with formidable therapeutic potential. Nevertheless, pitfalls are hidden behind poor pharmacological and toxicological knowledge of plant extracts, nonstandardized methods of extraction, and undefined and nonrepeatable qualitative and quantitative composition. In this context, novel experimental studies on plant products and appreciated and are necessary to reinforce the scientific soundness of phytotherapy. This book aims to respond to this medical need comprehensively highlighting the newest discoveries in vegetal resources with an emphasis on pharmacological activity.
Medicinal chemists around the world have been inspired by nature and have successfully extracted chemicals from plants. Research on enzymatic modifications of naturally occurring compounds has played a critical role in the search for biologically active molecules to treat diseases. This book set explores compounds of interest to researchers and clinicians. It presents a comprehensive analysis about the medicinal chemistry (drug design, structure-activity relationships, permeability data, cytotoxicity, appropriate statistical procedures, molecular modelling studies) of different compounds. Each chapter brings contributions from known scientists explaining experimental results which can be tra...
The past and future of inflammatory pharmacology research: a hot topic in health and disease Inflammation is a physiological response to a traumatic injury, bacterial, or viral infection. However, if not appropriately controlled, it contributes to a long list of diseases, including asthma, atherosclerosis, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, and cancer. Different are the types of inflammatory responses. Acute inflammation is an immediate body response to the cellular damage induced by pathogens, noxious stimuli, or physical injury – it is a short-term response resulting in healing via time-dependent changes of leukocyte functions. First, a leukocytes infiltration happens within the damaged regi...
Herbal Medicine for Autoimmune Diseases addresses the immune system's role in autoimmune conditions and introduces evidence-based herbal therapies for diseases like lupus, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and more. Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a sub-field of Artificial Intelligence, linguistics, and computer science and is concerned with the generation, recognition, and understanding of human languages, both written and spoken. NLP systems examine the grammatical structure of sentences as well as the specific meanings of words, and then they utilize algorithms to extract meaning and produce results. Machine Learning and Deep Learning in Natural Language Processing aims at providing a review of current Neural Network techniques in the NLP field, in particular about Conversational Agents (chatbots), Text-to-Speech, management of non-literal content – like emotions, but also satirical expression...

Industrial Hemp: Food and Nutraceutical Applications is a comprehensive overview of different value chains for the industrial hemp industry. This excellent reference supports multi-disciplines and presents industrial hemp as a multi-purpose crop, with special attention paid to its food and nutraceutical applications. By combining and presenting multidisciplinary knowledge, readers will be introduced to recent progress in hemp production, processing, utilization and marketing. The book provides a systematic overview of alternative hemp applications, but also serves as a guide to the challenges needed for hemp revitalization to reach its fullness. - Provides information on the biological activity of hemp extracts, their roles in disease prevention, and potential applications in the functional food and nutraceutical sectors - Discusses hemp as an alternative protein source used to create innovative hemp-based foods - Presents case studies that describe opportunities in hemp research, hemp agriculture and hemp processing
In this eBook, we have grouped together 16 original contributions which have addressed the translational potential for therapeutics developed on the conceptual framework of the resolution of inflammation. The take home message of our effort, and the efforts of our colleagues who wrote these pieces, is that completely different drugs can be designed and modelled on the mediators and targets of resolution. By implementing this 180° shift in the way we plan the drug development programme (that is by focusing on agonists and/or promoting the actions of pro-resolution agonists) we can offer a fresh approach to the clinical management of chronic diseases that affect the modern society. With this ...
