En los dos últimos siglos y con una cronología variable, los intelectuales latinoamericanos han desempeñado su labor desde distintos puntos de la esfera pública. Como no podía ser de otra forma, las problemáticas en torno a su posicionamiento y función social, así como las ligadas a su papel en la construcción del Estado-nación o a la forma en que gestionaron los tráficos de conocimiento que a través de ellos circularon de un ámbito cultural a otro, han atraído la atención historiográfica. Este libro analiza dichas problemáticas para el caso de Costa Rica, con especial atención a las transferencias culturales que esa nación recibió de España entre 1940 y 1980, coincidiendo, de un lado, con el establecimiento en aquella del modelo de Estado Benefactor y, de otro, con la diplomacia cultural que el franquismo desplegó en Latinoamérica.
