Asian Forms of the Nation
The general tendency among theorists in nationalism and national identity has been to assume that the modernization process in Asia and Africa is a kind of distorted reflection of a Western precedent; Asian forms of the nation have rarely been seen as independent, alternative models. Among today's leading theoreticians, there is a growing tendency to take Asia seriously, and to include Asian examples in the general discussion. The aim of the present collection is to build on and reinforce this tendency. It does not postulate any specifically Asian form of the nation, as opposed to a Western one. Rather, it seeks to demonstrate that in Asia, as well as in Europe, each nation forms a unique amalgam which can be compared fruitfully with others. History, culture and geography have posed various kinds of limits to what can be imagined (as Benedict Anderson puts it). Monsoon Asia
The maritime southern rim of Asia, from the Arabian Sea in the west to the South China Sea in the east, has been the most important axis of long-distance travel, trade, and cultural exchange in human history. As a result, the countries of South and Southeast Asia, from Pakistan to Indonesia, have important aspects of historical experience in common. Twentieth-century geopolitics, however, have led South Asia and Southeast Asia to be treated in scholarship and education as two distinct fields of study. The purpose of the present reader is to contest this conventional metageographic divide by bringing together scholars of South or/and Southeast Asia from diverse disciplines to reflect, through their own work, on the possibility and utility of conceiving the two areas as a single overarching region, referred to here as Monsoon Asia.

Rebellion to Integration
This study deals with the political history of the Indonesian province of West Sumatra and the Minangkabau people from the late colonial period up to the present, focussing on the course and degree of their integration into the contemporary Indonesian state. The book provides a local perspective on the growth and development of the nationalist movement in Indonesia, the struggle for independence, and the trauma involved for West Sumatra in adapting to an Indonesian state based on very different concepts of government than those that animated the anticolonial struggle in the region. It also helps understand the backgrounds of the recent violent insurgence in several parts of the Indonesian archipelago against the rule of the Javanese-controlled central government.

Creating Laos
This book examines the process through which Laos came into existence under French colonial rule through to the end of World War II. Here, Laos's position at the intersection of two conflicting spatial layouts of "Thailand" and "Indochina" made its national form a particularly contested process. Rather than analyze this process in terms of administrative and political structures, the book discusses how a specific idea about a separate "Lao space" and its culture was formed.
