Since the Spanish Kingdom of Jaén bordered on Moorish Granada, Jews faced intense religious fanaticism and were often forcibly converted or trapped in local war campaigns. After the occupation of most of Muslim Granada in 1485, the large Converso population in Jaén was severely persecuted by the Inquisition.
