While there is a comparatively rich research literature on English acknowledgement texts, research into Chinese PhD thesis acknowledgement texts, especially the social roles of the texts, has received little attention. To fill this gap, this book examines a corpus of Chinese PhD thesis acknowledgement texts in order to explore both the typical structure of the texts and their social function within the particular university setting as well as within a broader social context. The author uses stratified purposive sampling and semi-structured text-based interviews with PhD graduates, their supervisors and other acknowledgee representatives to gather data. Furthermore, PhD guidebooks, supervisors' CVs and graduates' publications have been collected. Three theoretical notions - communities of practice, audience and politeness - are drawn into account for the findings of the study. Besides uncovering several undocumented move patterns, the book offers insightful understanding of acknowledgement texts both as a part-genre of research writing as well as a window of the textual and social world of PhD graduates' chorus of gratitude.
The familiar image of the Habsburg Army as a last supranational institution holding the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy together was decisively shaped by the pro-military literature and journalism of the pre-1914 period. Many of the Austrian writers who forged that image in countless feuilletons, stories and novels have long since been forgotten. This study aims to reconstruct the ideological context of military fictions and fiction on military themes and by doing so contribute to the debate concerning texts that are already well-known.
Schiller defined the object of beauty as «living form.» He explicitly related his thesis to a rationalistic aesthetics of form and to an empiricistic aesthetics of life. First the problem of aesthetic theorizing is treated. In the light of this discussion, respectively, the aesthetics of life, form, and living form are analyzed. First the respective ontological universe of each aesthetic theory is developed, then the aesthetic universe in terms of ontological commitments, and finally the specific interpretation of beauty is outlined.

This book examines the unique phenomenon of the pictorialization of Dürer's drawings. Representative Northern European painters in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries - such as Hans Schäufelein, Jacob Hoefnagel and Jan Brueghel the Elder - reproduced Dürer's drawings, from single motifs to whole compositions in brilliant colors. This publication discusses the character of Dürer's workshop, preferences for drawings in Renaissance Germany, questions about authorship and ownership around works of art and the reception and adaptation of the Northern Renaissance art in the Prague Mannerism. It also demonstrates how in the course of the sixteenth century the evaluation of Dürer's drawings in Northern Europe changed.

Storytelling and remembering rely on similar practices: they both arrange images in an ordered structure. A story is initially memorised by the author in a mental structure which is transferred to the page via the author's choice of location, organisation and imagery. An interpretation that emphasises these features enhances the natural capacity for comprehension by mimicking the memory process. This study describes and uncovers memory systems (including the memory palace and the memory journey) in medieval texts. The ancient memory techniques are compared to cognitive psychology and used to interpret four modern novels. A practical method of interpretation is devised which provides the reader with direct access to a story by opening the door into the storyteller's memory palace.
