From the fifteenth century to the beginning of the nineteenth century, devotional music played a fundamental role in the Iberian world. Songs in the vernacular, usually referred to by the generic name of 'villancico', but including forms as varied as madrigals, ensaladas, tonos, cantatas or even oratorios, were regularly performed at many religious feasts in major churches, royal and private chapels, convents and in monasteries. Lejos de pretender ser una investigación etnomusicológica, el Cancionero Musical de Castilla-La Mancha se traza los objetivos, en primer lugar, de presentar un acopio de cantos populares profundamente enraizados en las gentes y las tierras castellano-manchegas, así como -de ahí el subtítulo de 298 propuestas para la enseñanza y práctica de Música de Educación Infantil y Primaria-, además, servir de elemento insustituible de trabajo para los maestros especialistas en música que ejercen su labor docente en los centros de enseñanza de Castilla-La Mancha. A las partituras de las canciones y a los textos de éstas, sigue una Tabla de recogida de datos en la que el docente puede encontrarse, sintetizados, los aspectos técnico-musicales más relevantes de cada canción a fin de poder ayudar a programar la enseñanza y práctica interpretativa de estos cantos.
