Kebatinan itu membuat psikoterapi dan konseling sangat individualistik, terlalu klinis, dan tidak peduli keragaman budaya dan sistem sosial. Gerakan perjuangan persamaan hak tahun 1960-an mendorong psikoterapi dan konseling mengkaji strategi monobudaya dan munculah strategi multibudaya, lintas-budaya, dan antarbudaya.
