Sexual Interactions in Eukaryotic Microbes provides a comprehensive discussion of the sexual processes of eukaryotic microorganisms. The book is organized into three parts. Part I presents an overview of intercellular communication, covering the modes of cellular communication and the benefit of using eukaryotic microbes for studying cell communication. Part II on pheromonal interactions includes studies on the role of sex pheromones in organisms such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Allomyces, Volvox, and Neurospora crassa. Part III on cell surface interactions presents studies such as sexual interactions in Saccharomyces cerevisiae; sexual interactions of the cell surface in Paramecium; and the genetics and cellular biology of sexual development in Ustilago violacea. This book will be of value on a multitude of levels: from a general reference text to a source of research ideas. It will appeal to a wide spectrum of readers in a large number of disciplines, but will be particularly useful to cell biologists, microbiologists, protozoologists, and mycologists interested in the study of cellular communication.

This highly researched yeast, which represents a system used by cell biologists, geneticists and molecular biologists, has been given only minimal coverage in the literature. Its properties make it an excellent organism for DNA and related biotechnology reseach. This book, which is the first attempt to collate existing information in one source, will be an invaluable aid to those initiating projects with this organism.

Advances in Solar Energy

The field of solar energy conversion has become an important discipline with a recognized potential to significantly contribute to the world supply of energy. It is diversified and encompasses a wide variety of disciplines - from mechanical engineering to physics, from biology to architecture, from ocean science to agriculture, from chemistry to atmospheric science, to name some of the major fields. It involves fields which have matured to the engineering aspects, such as the conversion of solar energy into heat or of wind into shaft work. It includes other fields in which more basic science research is necessary to unravel the micro-structures of nature, as, for example, for photovoltaic conversion or for certain bioengineering tasks. Several of these fields have elements which have been common knowledge for centuries but sometimes forgotten at times of cheap energy supplies, while others have barely started with first studies. Most of the fields have seen during the last decade a substantial advance in sophistication, in theoretical understanding, in demonstrated feasibility, in developing hardware, in field testing, with some moving into a phase of initial commercialization.

Advances in Biotechnology, Volume IV: Current Developments in Yeast Research covers the proceedings of the Fifth International Yeast Symposium. The book presents several papers that discuss several aspects of yeast. Comprised of 95 chapters and organized into eight sections, the book first discusses the industrial and agricultural uses of yeast, and then covers genetics. The third section reviews sporulation and conjugation. Section IV tackles biochemistry, while Section V and Section VI talk about taxonomy, ecology, and cell cycle. The seventh section covers the Phaff symposium and the last section reviews the plenary lectures. The book will be of great interest to researchers and professionals such as botanists and agriculturists who have an interest in understanding the various aspects of yeast.

Advances in Biotechnology, Volume III: Fermentation Products is the third of a series of three volumes and is based on the proceedings of the Sixth International Fermentation Symposium (IFS-6) held in London, Ontario, Canada, 20-25 July 1980. This volume contains 87 papers organized into nine sections. The papers under Section I deal with developments in the field of secondary metabolism (functions of secondary metabolites in the producing organisms; roles of plasmids in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites; and protoplast fusion in industrial microorganisms). Sections II to VII examine the fermentation of antibiotics; amino acids, vitamins, and nucleotides; microbial enzymes; products from immobilized cells and enzymes; mycotoxins; and biopolymers. The final two sections present studies on bioconversions. The volume also includes the invited keynote address of Professor Hamao Umezawa ""Problems and Trends in the Development of New Antibiotics and Other Useful Microbial Products"". This volume will be a valuable resource for students and researchers in industrial microbiology, biochemical engineering and related areas, as well as managers of biotechnology.
