Fearing for the lives of his family, Mihaly Borbely, a Christian reporter, former partisan, and anti-fascist living in Communist Hungary during the 1950s, confesses to a crime he did not commit. Borbely escapes execution and is sentenced to only six years in prison, but he soon learns that the relatively short sentence is no reprieve and certainly no blessing. He's forced to witness murders, rapes, and other violent acts. All the prison crimes go unreported, and virtually every act goes unpunished. It doesn't take long for Borbely to realize that in Hungary, anyone on the wrong side of Communism can become a political prisoner. Here, there is no justice. But even under such terror, hope lingers. The prisoners plan a mass breakout to coincide with the Soviet Union's planned occupation of Yugoslavia. But the Soviet troops will pass right through the heart of the Hungarian countryside, where the prison is located. The focus of Through Your Eyes: Religious Alterity and the Early Modern Western Imagination is the (mostly Western) understanding, representation and self-critical appropriation of the "religious other" between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Mutually constitutive processes of selfing/othering are observed through the lenses of creedal Jews, a bhakti Brahmin, a widely translated Morisco historian, a collector of Western and Eastern singularia, Christian missionaries in Asia, critical converts, toleration theorists, and freethinkers: in other words, people dwelling in an 'in-between' space which undermines any binary conception of the Self and the Other. The genesis of the volume was in exchanges between eight international scholars and the two editors, intellectual historian Giovanni Tarantino and anthropologist Paola von Wyss-Giacosa, who share an interest in comparatism, debates over toleration, and history of emotions. During the period of the Baroque and Enlightenment the word “emotion”, denoting passions and feelings, came into usage, albeit in an irregular fashion. “Emotion” ultimately emerged as a term in its own right, and evolved in English from meaning physical agitation to describe mental feeling. However, the older terminology of “passions” and “affections” continued as the dominant discourse structuring thinking about feeling and its wider religious, political, social, economic, and moral imperatives. The emotional cultures described in these essays enable some comparative discussion about the history of emotions, and particularly the causes and consequences of emotional change in the larger cultural contexts of the Baroque and Enlightenment. Emotions research has enabled a rethinking of dominant narratives of the period-of histories of revolution, state-building, the rise of the public sphere, religious and scientific transformation, and more. As a new and dynamic field, the essays here are just the beginning of a much bigger history of emotions.
