Workload partition functionality, originally introduced in 2007 with the release of IBM AIX Version 6, is a strategic component of the IBM AIX Operating System. With the release of AIX V6.1 TL2 in November 2008, both the core functionality and features related to managing workload partitions have been improved and expanded. This IBM Redbooks publication provides an updated introduction and "how to" guide for system administrators and architects using workload partitions in AIX V6.1 TL2. It builds on the original concepts and practices described in the first Redbooks publication about this topic, Introduction to Workload Partition Management in IBM AIX Version 6.1, SG24-7431 , published in 20...

Root Demographics and Their Efficiencies in Sustainable Agriculture, Grasslands and Forest Ecosystems

The International Society of Root Research sponsored the Symposium "Root Demographics and Their Efficiencies in Sustainable Agriculture, GrassLands and Forest Ecosystems," July 14-18, 1996, at the Madren Conference Center, Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina, USA. The conference was a continuation of a series of international symposiums on root research held every three to four years. Symposiums have also been held twice in Vienna, Austria, and once in Uppsala, Sweden, and Almaty, Kazahkstan prior to the meeting at Clemson University. The sponsoring society has made a particular effort in these symposia to include root scientists from the former Soviet Union because of the importance of exchanging information on a worldwide basis. This symposium continued and promoted that effort by providing travel grants to several scientists from that region; however, funds for that purpose were limited. Therefore, in compiling these proceedings, a number of papers from scientists from the former Soviet Union and former Warsaw Pack countries have been included even though the scientists were not actually present for the SymPOSIum.

Welcome to Peculiar, MO. For most, life is good in this idyllic Midwestern town, until a falling star brings an unearthly menace. Soon animals are found dying of a mysterious disease. At night, beasts begin to cry out in voices that sound almost like words, as they are drawn to a burned clearing to serve an alien will. Local widow Kelly Ross, who is struggling to make ends meet after the death of her husband, sends her young son into the forest on an errand, where he makes a frightening discovery. Spencer Dale, the town's mechanic, whose past contains a painful secret, begins to experience strange dreams and visions, as he relives memories that are not his own. Nine-year-old Rachel, a child of nature, becomes linked to an unspeakable crime that took place more than eighty years in the past, while a military operation moving inexorably towards the meteor's impact site makes its presence, and its plans, known. All of their lives are linked together, and their courage and faith are tested, as they are drawn to the site where the star fell to Earth and an alien life cycle reaches its terrifying climax.

Small town eastern America during and after the Civil War was home to an imaginative boy with a great intellectual eagerness. Confused by the loss of his family, unstimulated by the town around him, he seemed clothed in a viscosity that slowed his movements and held his thoughts down. He read literature and dwelled in the lives of its heroes, but his own existence seemed to him unimportant. He seemed set apart from the rest of reality. Then through a chain of improbable events, he brightened into an unmistakable glory. He poured out from his innermost being a great and wonderful thing, unlike any other, a gift to the world that only one person can give. The glory that rises in us is the beginning of all invention and the thing that separates each of us from all the others. Its seeds hide in the trivia all around, ruminating, festering, growing where we do not see.
