Prelude and Fugue for Classical Guitar

Prelude and Fugue for Classical Guitar

The Prelude and Fugue for the Left Hand Alone was completed in 1931, the year before he returned to Mexico. Although composed in steady eighth-notes, the Prelude subtly projects the 3+3+2 rhythm so characteristic of Spanish dances. Against this rhythmic backdrop, Ponce creates a gentle, mournful lament. The French harmonic influence in this work is especially prominent in the threevoiced Fugue, reminiscent of the richly chromatic style of Cesar Franck's Prelude, Choral and Fugue. Here, Ponce is intense, sombre, and compelling. Guitarist Gregg Nestor gave the European radio premiere of his arrangement of the Prelude and Fugue on the BBC (London) in 1982 and its American début on December 12th, 1986 at Holy Trinity Church in Alhambra, California during the concert series sponsored by the then-named Guitar Association of Los Angeles.

Songs Of The Clown - for Classical Guitar

SONGS OF THE CLOWN, Op. 29b (1941) Towards the end of the 1920’s Korngold began an artistic collaboration with the aforementioned Max Reinhardt, the legendary theater producer, impresario and co-founder of the Salzburg Festival. In 1937 Reinhardt asked Korngold to provide songs and incidental music for a production he was planning entitled “Shakespeare’s Women, Clowns and Songs”. Korngold completed these songs in Austria that year. However soon after the Nazis annexed Austria and confiscated his property. Among the manuscripts destroyed were the Shakespeare Songs. It was not until 1941 that Reinhardt was finally able to stage his production. Incredibly, Korngold reconstructed the entire manuscripts from memory, and these songs were first performed on 28 June, 1941, by Nanette Fabray at the Reinhardt Workshop Theatre in Los Angeles.

Maxixe for Classical Guitar and Chamber Orchestra

"The genesis of this arrangement of Maxixe occurred in 1980 during my stay in England. I was playing the Manuel Ponce Guitar Concerto with a municipal orchestra and was asked to prepare two encore items. As the concerto I was playing was by Ponce I chose two short works in keeping with the Mexican and South American style, Maxixe by Agustín Barrios and the folk song Aire de joropo."
