This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Stochastic Algorithms: Foundations and Applications, SAGA 2003, held in Hatfield, UK in September 2003. The 12 revised full papers presented together with three invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. Among the topics addressed are ant colony optimization, randomized algorithms for the intersection problem, local search for constraint satisfaction problems, randomized local search and combinatorial optimization, simulated annealing, probabilistic global search, network communication complexity, open shop scheduling, aircraft routing, traffic control, randomized straight-line programs, and stochastic automata and probabilistic transformations.

Stochastic Algorithms: Foundations and Applications

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Stochastic Algorithms: Foundations and Applications, SAGA 2005, held in Moscow, Russia in October 2005. The 14 revised full papers presented together with 5 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The contributed papers included in this volume cover both theoretical as well as applied aspects of stochastic computations whith a special focus on new algorithmic ideas involving stochastic decisions and the design and evaluation of stochastic algorithms within realistic scenarios.

WHY MANAGERS CAN'T LEAD AND LEADERS CAN'T MANAGE is the book that addresses the perennial problem facing all executives in struggling to maximise their productivity, efficiency and effectiveness potentials, in their effort to become great managers as well as great leaders at the same time. The book offers the unique solution of LEADAGEMENT to this predicament in showing managers and leaders the way to a balanced executive development and superlative productive capacity achievement by overcoming the effects of executive dissonance which affects all executives globally. This unique book addresses such critical EXECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT issues as: Who is the Better Executive: The Manager or the Leader? Neither of them. The better Executive is the Leadager,a SUPEREXECUTIVE, who is a Master of the basics, the mechanics and the dynamics of both systems.

Land, Power and Prestige

A major phase of economic expansion occurred in southern England during the second and early first millennium BC, accompanied by a fundamental shift in regional power and wealth towards the eastern lowlands. This book offers a synthesis of available data on Bronze Age lowland field systems in England, including a gazetteer of sites. The research demonstrates the importance of large-scale animal husbandry in the mixed farming regimes as evidenced in the design of the field systems which incorporate droveways, stock proof fencing, watering holes, cow pens, sheep races and gateways for stockhandling. It is argued that the field systems represented a form of conspicuous production, an "intensification" of agrarian endeavour or a statement of intent, to be understood in relation to the maintenance, display and promotion of hierarchical social systems involved in exchange with their counterparts across the English Channel.

Roma Music and Emotion

Roma Music and Emotion is an important work of scholarship at the intersection of ethnomusicology and anthropology, combining long-term field research with hypotheses from the cognitive sciences to illustrate the musical world of the Roma of Transylvania and, in so doing, propose a groundbreaking anthropological theory on the emotional power of music.

Cinemas of Hertfordshire

There have been many changes since the first edition of this publication appeared in 1984. In addition to the closure of many more local cinemas, there has been the growth of the multiplexes so the picture is not entirely black. It is written by Alan Eyles, a fulltime specialist researcher and writer on the history of cinema. The new edition has twice the number of pages as the first and nearly 200 photographs including many which have been uncovered by the author in the last 20 years. It includes every cinema which has opened in Hertfordshire since 1908 (when the first opened its doors) and is arranged by town for ease of reference.

Sociolinguistic Typology

This book considers how far social factors explain why human societies produce different kinds of language at different times and places and why some languages and dialects get simpler while others get more complex. It does so in the context of a wide range of languages and societies.

SAGA 2001, the ?rst Symposium on Stochastic Algorithms, Foundations and Applications, took place on December 13–14, 2001 in Berlin, Germany. The present volume comprises contributed papers and four invited talks that were included in the ?nal program of the symposium. Stochastic algorithms constitute a general approach to ?nding approximate solutions to a wide variety of problems. Although there is no formal proof that stochastic algorithms perform better than deterministic ones, there is evidence by empirical observations that stochastic algorithms produce for a broad range of applications near-optimal solutions in a reasonable run-time. The symposium aims to provide a forum for presentat...
