I have attended quite a few conferences and meetings devoted to the ideas of Kurt Lewin. Among these the 1984 conference at Temple was out standing for its high quality. What made it so successful? Several things. The conference included a stimulating mix of generations. The first generation of women who obtained their Ph. D. 's in psychology in Berlin in the 1920's strike me as a remarkable group. Now in their 80's, they are characterized by enormous vigor and energy. They are still professionally active. This book analyzes the narrative dynamics of social formations in British India, using statistical and ethnographic records, visual cultures, and linguistic exercises to describe the British Empire’s production of knowledge about so-called “strange new worlds.” Lalruatkima then labels these narrative dynamics as “scripturalizing” to account for the creation, or writing, of these worlds into existence. This focus underscores empire as one of many such formations imagined against the backdrop of contested conversations about what it is and what it could be. When reverse engineered, empire throws into sharp relief its constituent narrative placeholders, and the sequences of meaning-making that connect them. Power differentials between the imperial center and frontier determine the placeholders and how they fit into the larger narrative. These discursive components in turn engender the politically charged attitudes and relations within the imperial domain. Lalruatkima excavates the imperial archive for material that accounts for these narrative dynamics.

Research on human judgment and decision making has been strongly guided by a normative/descriptive approach, according to which human decision making is compared to the normative models provided by decision theory, statistics, and the probability calculus. A common empirical finding has been that human behavior deviates from the prescriptions by normative models--that judgments and decisions are subject to cognitive biases. It is interesting to note that Swedish research on judgment and decision making made an early departure from this dominating mainstream tradition, albeit in two different ways. The Neo-Brunswikian research highlights the relationship between the laboratory task and the adaptation to a natural environment. The process-tracing approach attempts to identify the cognitive processes before, during, and after a decision. This volume summarizes current Swedish research on judgment and decision making, covering topics, such as dynamic decision making, confidence research, the search for dominance structures and differentiation, and social decision making.
