How did white evangelicals, a group that had once rallied national support for the federal minimum wage and progressive child labor laws, vote overwhelmingly for Donald Trump in 2016? In The End of Empathy, John W. Compton presents a nuanced portrait of the changing values of evangelical voters over the last century. To explain the rise of white Protestant social concern in the latter part of the nineteenth century and its sudden demise at the end of the twentieth, Compton argues that religious conviction, by itself, is rarely sufficient to motivate empathetic political behavior. When believers do act empathetically--championing reforms that transfer resources or political influence to less privileged groups within society, for example--it is typically because strong religious institutions have compelled them to do so.

An Elusive Victorian

Codiscoverer of the theory of evolution by natural selection, Alfred Russel Wallace should be recognized as one of the titans of Victorian science. Instead he has long been relegated to a secondary place behind Darwin. Worse, many scholars have overlooked or even mocked his significant contributions to other aspects of Victorian culture. With An Elusive Victorian, Martin Fichman provides the first comprehensive analytical study of Wallace's life and controversial intellectual career. Fichman examines not only Wallace's scientific work as an evolutionary theorist and field naturalist but also his philosophical concerns, his involvement with theism, and his commitment to land nationalization a...

Kentucky Soldiers of the War of 1812

Here is the primary reference source for the names and service records of upwards of 20,000 Kentucky soldiers and officers, both regular and militia, who served in the War of 1812. The muster rolls are laid out in tabular format by regiment and company, and thereunder the names are arranged by rank, with records of dates of appointment or enlistment and remarks such as when discharged, deceased, etc. As the official roster, this work was ordered to be compiled and printed by an Act of the Kentucky General Assembly, the number not to exceed 300 copies. The original records are now in the custody of the Kentucky Military Department, Frankfurt. To the work as originally published we have added an Index, completely lacking in the original. Our reprint is further enhanced by the inclusion of an Introduction by G. Glenn Clift which sets forth the background, location, and other sources of the records of the War of 1812 for the State of Kentucky.
