In this collection authors apply spatial analysis to case studies of social, economic, and political dynamics in West, Central, and East Africa during the nineteenth and twentieth century. Also included is a lengthy essay re-interpreting tropical Africa, 1800-1930, using spatial theory.
This new handbook will be welcomed by all congregations using the Revised Common Lectionary. Convenient and user-friendly, this one-volume guide provides resources for the entire three-year lectionary cycle, including midweek festival days.
This book is an introduction to the use of machine learning and data-driven approaches in fluid simulation and animation, as an alternative to traditional modeling techniques based on partial differential equations and numerical methods – and at a lower computational cost. This work starts with a brief review of computability theory, aimed to convince the reader – more specifically, researchers of more traditional areas of mathematical modeling – about the power of neural computing in fluid animations. In these initial chapters, fluid modeling through Navier-Stokes equations and numerical methods are also discussed. The following chapters explore the advantages of the neural networks approach and show the building blocks of neural networks for fluid simulation. They cover aspects related to training data, data augmentation, and testing. The volume completes with two case studies, one involving Lagrangian simulation of fluids using convolutional neural networks and the other using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) approaches.
This book places lion conservation and the relationship between people and lions both in historical context and in the context of the contemporary politics of conservation in Africa. The killing of Cecil the Lion in July 2015 brought such issues to the public’s attention. Were lions threatened in the wild and what was the best form of conservation? How best can lions be saved from extinction in the wild in Africa amid rural poverty, precarious livelihoods for local communities and an expanding human population? This book traces man’s relationship with lions through history, from hominids, to the Romans, through colonial occupation and independence, to the present day. It concludes with a...
Thrilling, true tales from the Vidocq Society, a team of the world's finest forensic investigators whose monthly gourmet lunches lead to justice in ice-cold murders Three of the greatest detectives in the world--a renowned FBI agent turned private eye, a sculptor and lothario who speaks to the dead, and an eccentric profiler known as "the living Sherlock Holmes"-were heartsick over the growing tide of unsolved murders. Good friends and sometime rivals William Fleisher, Frank Bender, and Richard Walter decided one day over lunch that something had to be done, and pledged themselves to a grand quest for justice. The three men invited the greatest collection of forensic investigators ever assem...
