This revised textbook provides students with a first exposure to the growing field of medical anthropology. The narrative is guided by unifying themes. First, medical anthropology is actively engaged in helping to address pressing health problems around the globe through research, intervention, and policy-related initiatives. Second, illness and disease cannot be fully understood or effectively addressed by treating them solely as biological in nature; rather, health problems involve complex biosocial processes and resolving them requires attention to range of factors including systems of belief, structures of social relationship, and environmental conditions. Third, through an examination of health inequalities on the one hand and environmental degradation and environment-related illness on the other, the book underlines the need for going beyond cultural or even ecological models of health toward a comprehensive medical anthropology. The authors show that a medical anthropology that integrates biological, cultural, and social factors to truly understand the origin of ill health will contribute to more effective and equitable health care systems.
Sometimes they really are out to get you. If you have been the target of group bullying in your workplace, school, church or community, you are not alone. Mobbing is a patterned and predictable form of group aggression that happens when someone in a position of leadership sets out to eliminate someone and persuades the rest of the group to go along. In Mobbed! What to Do When They Really Are Out to Get You, anthropologist Janice Harper explains how and why mobbing happens and suggests steps you can take to protect yourself once it's underway. Drawing on research in animal behavior, group psychology, gossip and false memory, Dr. Harper demonstrates how current approaches to eradicating "bullies" in the workplace are more likely to backfire than help the mobbing target. In this book, she presents an entirely new way to understand collective human aggression and heal from its devastating impacts.
Endangered Species: Health, Illness and Death among Madagascar's People of the Forest is an ethnographic study of a group of people living in a forested region in Madagascar. These people have been targeted for recent conservation and development initiatives intended to protect species biodiversity. Although international aid dollars are tied to national conservation policy, very little has been written on how these policies are affecting the people who live in Madagascar. Based on anthropological research in a village located on the periphery of a U.S.-funded national park, and further supported with archival and library research, this study shows how concepts of culture have been misused b...

Following a nervous breakdown, Ms. Freedman corresponds with Janice and Cody from an insane asylum run on the capitalist model of cognitive-behavioral therapy, where inmates practice water aerobics to rebuild their Psychiatric Credit Scores. The lives of Janice, Cody, and Ms. Freedman are reve...
