Prior to 1862, when the Department of Agriculture was established, the report on agriculture was prepared and published by the Commissioner of Patents, and forms volume or part of volume, of his annual reports, the first being that of 1840. The Rinker family originated in the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland. Hans Jakob Rinker (1724-1797) was born in Nuerensdorf, Switzerland and immigrated to America with his wife Susanna Bachmann. They settled in Virginia and were the parents of at least five children, three of whom survived to maturity. Descendants live in Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and other parts of the United States.
