A place called Crockett's Corner began as a seventeenth century colonial settlement that grew into a stable and sustainable nineteenth century American agrarian landscape. During thetwentieth century, in a rapid but staged process, the landscape was changed into an edge city. These changes were the direct result, especially after 1938, of prevailing public policies which acted to constrain some land uses while supporting others.Landscape change has had unintended consequences, including local social network destruction, historic building demolition, and unmitigated air and non-point source water pollution. Raising awareness of the deep history of this place may help empower advocates for historic preservation, open space, environmental protection and more sustainable land use practices in the future.

The Unthinkable Happened:

As we approach the twenty-second anniversary of the catastrophic collapse of the World Trade Center, one of the world's signature symbols of capitalism, Dr. Charles H. Thornton, a preeminent structural engineer, has written a book applying his engineering design principles from the construction of two of the world's tallest buildings: the twin Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (built 1999), and Taipei 101 in Taiwan, ROC (built 2003). Dr. Thornton has the insight and design expertise to finally set the record straight on what really happened on September 11, 2001. In the early 1960s, as David Rockefeller's sixty-story Chase Manhattan Bank Headquarters near Wall Street was nearing comp...

The annual conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS) is the flagship conference on neural computation. It draws preeminent academic researchers from around the world and is widely considered to be a showcase conference for new developments in network algorithms and architectures. The broad range of interdisciplinary research areas represented includes computer science, neuroscience, statistics, physics, cognitive science, and many branches of engineering, including signal processing and control theory. Only about 30 percent of the papers submitted are accepted for presentation at NIPS, so the quality is exceptionally high. These proceedings contain all of the papers that were presented.

The definitive biography of the iconic skyscrapers and the ambitions that shaped them--from their dizzying rise to their unforgettable fall More than a year after the nation began mourning the lives lost in the attacks on the World Trade Center, it became clear that something else was being mourned: the towers themselves. They were the biggest and brashest icons that New York, and possibly America, has ever produced--magnificent giants that became intimately familiar around the globe. Their builders were possessed of a singular determination to create wonders of capitalism as well as engineering, refusing to admit defeat before natural forces, economics, or politics. No one knows the history...

Wind Wizard

How the father of wind engineering helped make the world's most amazing buildings and bridges possible With Wind Wizard, Siobhan Roberts brings us the story of Alan Davenport (1932-2009), the father of modern wind engineering, who investigated how wind navigates the obstacle course of the earth's natural and built environments—and how, when not properly heeded, wind causes buildings and bridges to teeter unduly, sway with abandon, and even collapse. In 1964, Davenport received a confidential telephone call from two engineers requesting tests on a pair of towers that promised to be the tallest in the world. His resulting wind studies on New York's World Trade Center advanced the art and sci...
