Reflections of Prague is the story of how a Czech Jewish family become embroiled in the most tragic and tumultuous episodes of the twentieth century. Through their eyes we see the history of their beloved Prague, a unique European city, and the wider, political forces that tear their lives apart. Their moving story traces the major events, turmoil, oppression and triumphs of Europe through the last hundred years – from the Austro-Hungarian Empire to the First World War; from the vibrant artistic and intellectual life of Prague in the times of Kafka, the Capek Brothers and Masaryk to years of hunger in a Polish ghetto and the concentration camps of Hitler; from the tyrannous rule of Stalin ...
In the rapidly evolving landscape of Industry 5.0, integrating emotional intelligence into the industrial framework is becoming increasingly crucial. Organizations are trying to navigate this uncharted territory and seeking guidance on understanding, implementing, and ethically managing artificial emotional intelligence (AEI). However, the absence of a comprehensive resource addressing these complexities has left a significant void in academic scholarship and industrial practice. Human-Machine Collaboration and Emotional Intelligence in Industry 5.0 offers a holistic exploration of emotion recognition, affective computing, and human-robot interaction. It equips readers with the knowledge and tools to successfully integrate AEI into Industry 5.0, ensuring a harmonious collaboration between humans and machines. This book is a go-to resource for scholars, industry professionals, and decision-makers seeking to leverage emotional intelligence in the Fifth Industrial Revolution by addressing practical implementations, ethical considerations, and real-world impacts.
"Two stage plays, translated from the Czech, both originally published in 1920. R.U.R is an early science fiction play about the Robots, created by scientists, revolting and taking over the world. The word Robot first appeared in this work and was since adopted universally. The robber is a romantic comedy/drama, about a young adventurer infatuating an elderly professor's daughter and taking over all his possessions. The play is set in a small Bohemian village."--Provided by publisher.
A dramatic account of life in Czechoslovakia's great capital during the Nazi Protectorate With this successor book to Prague in Black and Gold, his account of more than a thousand years of Central European history, the great scholar Peter Demetz focuses on just six short years—a tormented, tragic, and unforgettable time. He was living in Prague then—a "first-degree half-Jew," according to the Nazis' terrible categories—and here he joins his objective chronicle of the city under German occupation with his personal memories of that period: from the bitter morning of March 15, 1939, when Hitler arrived from Berlin to set his seal on the Nazi takeover of the Czechoslovak government, until ...

This book considers Russian, Czech and Slovak fiction in the late communist and early post-communist periods. It focuses on the most innovative trend to emerge in this period, on those writers who, during and after the collapse of communism, characterised themselves as 'liberators' of literature. It shows how these writers in their fiction and critical work reacted against the politicisation of literature by Marxist-Leninist and dissident ideologues, rejecting the conventional perception of literature as moral teacher, and redefining the nature and purpose of writing. The book demonstrates how this quest, enacted in the works of these writers, served for many critics and readers as a metaphor for the wider disorientation and crisis precipitated by the collapse of communism.
Jan Patocka's contribution to phenomenology and the philosophy of history mean that he is considered one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century. Yet, his writing is not widely available in English and the Anglophone world remains rather unfamiliar with his work. In this new book of essential Patocka texts, of which the majority have been translated from the original Czech for the first time, readers will experience a general introduction to the key tenets of his philosophy. This includes his thoughts on the relationship between philosophy and political engagement which strike at the heart of contemporary debates about freedom, political participation and responsibility and a truly pressing issue for modern Europe, what exactly constitutes a European identity? In this important collection, Patocka provides an original vision of the relationship between self, world, and history that will benefit students, philosophers and those who are interested in the ideals that underpin our democracies.
Dieu est-il mort ? Non.
