Divided into fourteen sections, several cases are presented under each category covering various disorders of the cardiac system, including congenital heart diseases, aortic valve diseases, pulmonary diseases, ECG abnormalities, cardiac arrhythmias, coronary artery disease and much more. Beginning with a brief history and findings based on physical examination, each case then includes analytical discussion on bedside investigations and proposals for treatment. Authored by a recognised expert in the field, this practical book is highly illustrated with echocardiographic, radiographic and electrocardiographic data. Predictive Modelling in Food

This volume brings together papers detailing the latest advances in the field of predictive microbiology in foods presented at the 10th International Conference on Predictive Modelling in Food, held in Córdoba, Spain, in 2016. Predictive microbiology is a scientific area providing mathematical models to predict microbial behaviour in the food environment, providing valuable tools for food risk managers, food scientists and the food industry as a whole. The book introduces the reader to the most used and recognized modelling techniques for food, providing a thorough overview of this discipline and establishing the basis for future investigations. It is presented as a compendium of several high-quality research studies developed across the world, representing a unique contribution to the field as it shows recent discoveries and new trends of modelling in food and risk assessment. The most innovative methods, such as the use of genomic information for risk assessment and the application of quantitative risk assessment technology for foodborne pathogenic microorganisms, are also included here.

Evolving the Mind

Evolving the Mind

Evolving the Mind has two main themes: how ideas about the mind evolved in science; and how the mind itself evolved in nature. The mind came into physical science when it was realised, first, that it is the activity of a physical object, a brain, which makes a mind; and secondly, that our theories of nature are largely mental constructions, artificial extensions of an inner model of the world which we inherited from our distant ancestors. From both of these perspectives, consciousness is the great enigma. If consciousness evolved, however, it is in some sense a material thing whatever else may be said of it. Physics, chemistry, molecular biology, brain function and evolutionary biology - almost the whole of science - is involved, and there can be no expert in all these fields. So the style of the book is simple, almost conversational. The excitement is that we seem to be close to a scientific theory of consciousness.

Ecological Urbanism

With the aim of projecting alternative and sustainable forms of urbanism, the book asks: What are the key principles of an ecological urbanism? How might they be organized? And what role might design and planning play in the process? While climate change, sustainable architecture, and green technologies have become increasingly topical, issues surrounding the sustainability of the city are much less developed. The premise of the book is that an ecological approach is urgently needed both as a remedial device for the contemporary city and an organizing principle for new cities. Ecological urbanism approaches the city without any one set of instruments and with a worldview that is fluid in sca...

A “marvelously amusing” political fable in which part of the European continent breaks off and drifts away on its own (Publishers Weekly, starred review). A Nobel Prize winner who has been called “the García Márquez of Portugal” (New Statesman) chronicles world events on a human scale in this exhilarating allegorical novel. One day, quite inexplicably, the Iberian Peninsula simply breaks free from the European continent and begins to drift as if it were a sort of stone raft. Panic ensues as residents and tourists attempt to escape, while crowds gather on cliffs to watch the newly formed island sail off into the sea. Meanwhile, five people on the island are drawn together—first by...
