Joyce Dyer's memoir offers readers a rare and authentic glimpse into the world and culture of an Alzheimer's special care unit. Her mother is the central focus, but we come to know an entire group of people, each in various stages of Alzheimer's and each affected in a different way by its ravages. Through the inhabitants of the unit, and through the staff that cares for them, we learn about Alzheimer's disease, and about the boundlessness of the human spirit. Dyer offers no cure for Alzheimer's, but she does discover wonder and hope. Seeking to identify their signature styles Dyer looks at the ways that canonical figures such as Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Walker Evans, Kertesz, Dorothea Lange, Diane Arbus and William Eggleston have photographed the same scenes and objects (benches, hats, hands, roads). In doing so Dyer constructs a narrative in which those photographers – many of whom never met in their lives – constantly come into contact with each other. It is the most ambitious example to date of a form of writing that Dyer has made his own: the non-fiction work of art.

Appalachia has long been seen as homogenous and tradition-bound. Allison E. Carey helps to remedy this misunderstanding, arguing that it has led to LGBTQ Appalachian authors being doubly erased—routinely overlooked both within United States literature because they are Appalachian and within the Appalachian literary tradition because they are queer.
