Surface/Subsurface

For nearly two decades the architecture firm Weiss/Manfredi has practiced outside the traditional boundaries of architecture. Their work with complex sites and programs benefits from an interdisciplinary approach and a dynamic integration of architecture, art, infrastructure, and landscape design. Surface/Subsurface presents nine major projects that have been completed since their first monograph Site Specific, published in 2000. Their design processexemplary of the best contemporary architectural practicesreveals potential in subsurface conditions with the goal of generating an entirely new language for the surface. Projects include the Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle, which wanders over a highway and train lines; the Museum of the Earth in Ithaca, New York, which manipulates the movement of water, cars, and visitors; and the Smith College Campus Center in Northampton, Massachusetts, whichtransforms the brick campus into a luminous terracotta surface. Each project is fully documented through project photographs, drawings, details, and texts.

Constructing a New Agenda

This follow-up to Kate Nesbitt's best-selling anthology Theorizing a New Agenda collects twenty-eight essays that address architecture theory from the mid-1990s, where Nesbitt left off, through the present. Kristin Sykes offers an overview of the myriad approaches and attitudes adopted by architects and architectural theorists during this era. Multiple themes—including the impact of digital technologies on processes of architectural design, production, materiality, and representation; the implications of globalization and networks of information; the growing emphasis on sustainable and green architecture; and the phenomenon of the 'starchitect' and iconic architecture—appear against a ba...

Globalization

The advancement of transportation and communication technology has facilitated greater interaction between people throughout the world, a process known as globalization. Because of its various economic, social, cultural, and environmental implications, attitudes toward globalization are ambivalent. There are concerns about the exploitation of people and resources from less economically stable countries and the destruction of cultural traditions, but at the same time it has allowed the world to open up for people on an international scale. It is important to weigh the many costs and benefits of this complicated issue to form a reasoned response, which this book adeptly supports.

Additive Manufacturing of Structural Electronics

Additive manufacturing, also called rapid prototyping or 3D printing is a disruptive manufacturing technique with a significant impact in electronics. With 3D printing, bulk objects with circuitry are embedded in the volume of an element or conformally coated on the surface of existing parts, allowing design and manufacturing of smaller and lighter products with fast customisation. The book covers both materials selection and techniques. The scope also covers the research areas of additive manufacturing of passive and active components, sensors, energy storage, bioelectronics and more.

This model has been expanded across several levels of analysis, including cultural, macro-social, and cellular factors. The 2nd edition also features: Greater emphasis on translating research into practice and policy. Two new sections on risk and protective factors for disease and another on social and structural influences that affect health such as socioeconomic status, reflect the current scholarship in the field. More on prevention and/or interventions and treatment in the applications section. The book opens with the fields central theories including a "newer" stress theory that emphasizes the interaction of biological and social systems. Part 2 reviews the mechanisms that help us explain the link between health and behavior across diseases and populations. The all new Part 3 focuses on variables that lead to the onset and progression of major diseases or that are instrumental in promoting health.
