In her lifetime, Júlia Lopes de Almeida was compared to Machado de Assis, the most important Brazilian writer of the nineteenth century. She was also considered for the inaugural list of members of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, but was excluded because of her gender. In the decades after her death, her work was largely forgotten. This publication, a winner of the English PEN award, marks the first novel-length translation of Almeida’s writing into English, including an Introduction to the novel and a Translators' Preface, and accompanies a general rediscovery of her extraordinary body of work in Brazil.

June E. Hahner’s pioneering work,Emancipating the Female Sex,offers the first comprehensive history of the struggle for women’s rights in Brazil. Based on previously undiscovered primary sources and fifteen years of research, Hahner’s study provides long-overdue recognition of the place of women in Latin American history. Hahner traces the history of Brazilian women’s fight for emancipation from its earliest manifestations in the mid-nineteenth century to the successful conclusion of the suffrage campaign in the 1930s. Drawing on interviews with surviving Brazilian suffragists and contemporary feminists as well as manuscripts and printed documents, Hahner explores the strategies and ideological positions of Brazilian feminists. In focusing on urban upper- and middle-class women, from whose ranks the leadership for change arose, she examines the relationship between feminism and social change in Brazil’s complex and highly stratified society.

Uma de suas obras mais marcantes é o romance O Correio da Roça. A obra se tomou um grande fenômeno editorial na época, e narra a história da viúva Maria que em função do falecimento de seu esposo, entra em situação financeira precária, restando-lhe apenas uma propriedade rural em ruínas, denominada Remanso. O romance é pautado literalmente na correspondência das duas amigas com Fernanda ajudando com informações e apoiando o esforço da amiga e suas filhas para realizar uma grande transformação, não somente na propriedade, como em todas as mulheres envolvidas.
