The Kingdom of What Is

Thirteen-year-old Kate is without her dad, lonely and depressed. Her family is broken and her world has lost its color and energy. One day, she is drawn by a crow into a land of uncommon beauty and love. But Kate soon discovers this new land is under siege by the rebel Grod Vurmis, who is causing freak storms and environmental disasters. Vurmis is turning the inhabitants into shadows, looting the kingdom libraries, and changing the stories so the people will no longer remember who they are. Kate's curiosity and courage lead her and three friends on a perilous quest to save the Kingdom of What Is. Traversing rivers, seas, and countryside, while avoiding the deceptions of Dreglings, they finally discover the royal palace in shambles. They join the paltry army of Prince Servan and go up against Grod Vurmis without weapons. Their quest comes to an unexpected and shocking end at the Great Gorge.

Reformed

A heart-warming childhood memoir about the son of a Dutch Reformed preacher, Reformed sweeps us into a young boy’s world of trials and redemption. Tornados, disabled siblings, death, guns, fears of losing his mother, and the mysteries of sex are challenges Karl faces before he is ten years old. He wrestles with the moral and theological puzzles that shape his world. Sometimes his conclusions challenge the status quo. When bad decisions lead to delinquency and crime, he must learn how to respond as flashes of truth and grace ignite in him the first flames of faith. Without self-pity, nostalgic sentiment, or indictment of his past, Petersen’s stories—vivid, candid, and humorous—draw us into his quirky family of ten in a time before iPads.

Ergodic Theory

The study of dynamical systems forms a vast and rapidly developing field even when one considers only activity whose methods derive mainly from measure theory and functional analysis. Karl Petersen has written a book which presents the fundamentals of the ergodic theory of point transformations and then several advanced topics which are currently undergoing intense research. By selecting one or more of these topics to focus on, the reader can quickly approach the specialized literature and indeed the frontier of the area of interest. Each of the four basic aspects of ergodic theory - examples, convergence theorems, recurrence properties, and entropy - receives first a basic and then a more a...

Kate and her two best friends are on the run from the law and find themselves back in the Kingdom of What Is. But what they find is worse than the problems they left behind. The land they’d risked everything to save years ago is in the hands of Malum, a tyrant who has made the people slaves and blighted every corner of the kingdom with plague and poverty. But there are whispers that Prince Servan still lives, reigniting hope that Kate may be reunited with him. Together, they may find a way to save the world once more. Armed with nothing but their wits and courage, Kate and a band of rebels must race against time to stop Malum before he gathers his fleet and sets the kingdom on an irreversible path of extinction.

Ergodic Theory, Dynamical Systems, and the Continuing Influence of John C. Oxtoby

This volume contains the proceedings of three conferences in Ergodic Theory and Symbolic Dynamics: the Oxtoby Centennial Conference, held from October 30–31, 2010, at Bryn Mawr College; the Williams Ergodic Theory Conference, held from July 27–29, 2012, at Williams College; and the AMS Special Session on Ergodic Theory and Symbolic Dynamics, held from January 17–18, 2014, in Baltimore, MD. This volume contains articles covering a variety of topics in measurable, symbolic and complex dynamics. It also includes a survey article on the life and work of John Oxtoby, providing a source of information about the many ways Oxtoby's work influenced mathematical thought in this and other fields.

Unimodularity in Randomly Generated Graphs

This volume contains the proceedings of the AMS Special Session on Unimodularity in Randomly Generated Graphs, held from October 8–9, 2016, in Denver, Colorado. Unimodularity, a term initially used in locally compact topological groups, is one of the main examples in which the generalization from groups to graphs is successful. The “randomly generated graphs”, which include percolation graphs, random Erdős–Rényi graphs, and graphings of equivalence relations, are much easier to describe if they result as random objects in the context of unimodularity, with respect to either a vertex-transient “host”-graph or a probability measure. This volume tries to give an impression of the various fields in which the notion currently finds strong development and application: percolation theory, point processes, ergodic theory, and dynamical systems.
