Lifetime-Oriented Structural Design Concepts

Safety and reliability are important for the whole expected service duration of an engineering structure. Therefore, prognostical solutions for different building types are needed and uncertainties have to be handled. Life-cycle strategies to control future structural degradations by concepts of appropriate design have to be developed, in case including means of inspection, maintenance, and repair. Aspects of costs and sustainability also matter. The Cooperative Research Center for Lifetime-Oriented Design Concepts (SFB 398) at Ruhr University in Bochum combines the wide range of scientific topics between structural engineering, structural and soil mechanics and material sciences regarding s...

Interaction Modeling in Mechanized Tunneling

This open access book compiles the research results of the Collaborative Research Center SFB 837, which has been running since 2010 and will end in 2022, with the topic "Interaction Modeling in Mechanized Tunneling". The Collaborative Research Center is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and is currently the world's largest research facility in the field of tunneling. The aim of the publication is to make our scientific findings accessible to the international professional community. The individual chapters deal with all subsystems relevant in mechanized tunneling and their interaction. The latest results of digital planning and real-time tunneling support have been included.

Multiscale Methods in Computational Mechanics

This work gives a modern, up-to-date account of recent developments in computational multiscale mechanics. Both upscaling and concurrent computing methodologies will be addressed for a range of application areas in computational solid and fluid mechanics: Scale transitions in materials, turbulence in fluid-structure interaction problems, multiscale/multilevel optimization, multiscale poromechanics. A Dutch-German research group that consists of qualified and well-known researchers in the field has worked for six years on the topic of computational multiscale mechanics. This text provides a unique opportunity to consolidate and disseminate the knowledge gained in this project. The addition of chapters written by experts outside this working group provides a broad and multifaceted view of this rapidly evolving field.

  • Publisher: Springer

This volume originates from the INDAM Symposium on Trends on Applications of Mathematics to Mechanics (STAMM), which was held at the INDAM headquarters in Rome on 5–9 September 2016. It brings together original contributions at the interface of Mathematics and Mechanics. The focus is on mathematical models of phenomena issued from various applications. These include thermomechanics of solids and gases, nematic shells, thin films, dry friction, delamination, damage, and phase-field dynamics. The papers in the volume present novel results and identify possible future developments. The book is addressed to researchers involved in Mathematics and its applications to Mechanics.

Variational Views in Mechanics

This volume provides a timely survey of interactions between the calculus of variations and theoretical and applied mechanics. Chapters have been significantly expanded since preliminary versions appeared in a special issue of the Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications (184(1), 2020) on “Calculus of Variations in Mechanics and Related Fields”. The variety of topics covered offers researchers an overview of problems in mechanics that can be analyzed with variational techniques, making this a valuable reference for researchers in the field. It also presents ideas for possible future areas of research, showing how the mastery of these foundational mathematical techniques can be used for many exciting applications. Specific topics covered include: Topology optimization Identification of material properties Optimal control Plastic flows Gradient polyconvexity Obstacle problems Quasi-monotonicity Variational Views in Mechanics will appeal to researchers in mathematics, solid-states physics, and mechanical, civil, and materials engineering.

This book not only examines the constructions and free-probabilistic properties of semicircular elements, as defined within the text, but also considers certain Banach-space operators acting on these semicircular elements and shows how they deform (i.e., preserve-or-distort) the semicircular law induced by orthogonal projections. FEATURES Suitable for graduate students and professional researchers in operator theory and/or analysis Numerous applications in related scientific fields and areas

From Convexity to Nonconvexity

This collection of papers is dedicated to the memory of Gaetano Fichera, a great mathematician and also a good friend to the editors. Regrettably it took an unusual amount of time to bring this collection out. This was primarily due to the fact that the main editor who had collected all of the materials, for this volume, P. D. Panagiotopoulos, died unexpectedly during the period when we were editing the manuscript. The other two editors in appreciation of Panagiotopoulos' contribution to this field, believe it is therefore fitting that this collection be dedicated to his memory also. The theme of the collection is centered around the seminal research of G. Fichera on the Signorini problem. V...

Analysis and Simulation of Multifield Problems

The analysis and simulation of multifield problems have recently become one of the most actual and vivid areas of research. Although the individual subproblems of complex technical and physical phenomena often are understood separately, their interaction and coupling create not only new difficulties but also a complete new level and quality of interacting coupled field problems. Presented by leading experts this book includes recent results in these fields from the International Conference on Multifield Problems, April 8-10, 2002 at the University of Stuttgart, Germany.

Direct and Projective Limits of Geometric Banach Structures.

This book describes in detail the basic context of the Banach setting and the most important Lie structures found in finite dimension. The authors expose these concepts in the convenient framework which is a common context for projective and direct limits of Banach structures. The book presents sufficient conditions under which these structures exist by passing to such limits. In fact, such limits appear naturally in many mathematical and physical domains. Many examples in various fields illustrate the different concepts introduced. Many geometric structures, existing in the Banach setting, are "stable" by passing to projective and direct limits with adequate conditions. The convenient frame...

The Eight International Conference "Bridges in Danube Basin"

The river Danube is an international waterway flowing 2857 km across Europe from the heights of the Schwarzwald massif down in the Black Sea delta. In its passage, the second longest European river crosses 22 geographical longitudes, joining 8 countries: Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria and Ukraine. The International Conference on Bridges across the Danube has become a traditional international event in bridge engineering, initiated by Prof. Miklos Iványi and organized periodically each third year in different Danube countries: 1992 on a ship, sailing on the Danube from Vienna via Bratislava to Budapest, 1995 in Bucharest, 1998 in Regensburg, 2001 in Bratislava, 2004 in Novi Sad, 2007 in Budapest and 2010 in Sofia. The Eight International Conference on Bridges across the Danube took place in Timisoara (Romania) and Belgrade (Serbia) in October 2013 aiming at analysing present trends in bridge construction in every Danube country.
