Reef Fish Spawning Aggregations: Biology, Research and Management

Reef fish spawning aggregations, ranging from small groups to many tens of thousands of individuals, are spectacular but poorly known natural phenomena whereby fish assemble at specific times and locations to spawn. For some species these large groups may be the only form of reproduction, the high fish numbers briefly giving a false impression of stability and abundance—an ‘illusion of plenty’. They are often a focus for intensive seasonal fishing because of their predictability and because many important commercial fishes form them. Highly vulnerable to overexploitation, many aggregations and their associated fisheries, have disappeared or are in decline. Few are effectively managed o...

The Early Life History (ELH) of marine fishes in Fishing Area 31, which includes the western central North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico, has remained incomplete over the years. This certainly wasn't because of any lack of interest, but rather a lack of a comprehensive merging of studies that would provide a broad understandi

Historical and Oceanographic Influences on Phylogeography in the California Current Ecosystem and Applications to Management of Marine Species

The overarching theme of my thesis is to explore patterns of larval dispersal as they relate to management of fished marine species. I employed a case study of two species: Megastraea undosa and Parastichopus parvimensis to investigate patterns of phylogeography and assess relative scales of dispersal for these two species which are fished in both California, USA and Baja California, MEX. To examine how some generalities for many species can be made for a specific geographic area, I reviewed all existing phylogeographic studies around Cape Mendocino, CA. Dispersal at a snail's pace: Strong genetic structure in the fisheries gastropod Megastaea undosa. Information about larval dispersal is ne...

Sustainable Development - the Cultural Perspective

"This current volume is a result of the Seventh and Eighth International Forum on Sustainable Technological Development in a Globalizing World. The Seventh Forum was held June 9-12, 2010 in Berlin. The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology hosted the event, which was organized around culture and sustainability. What we each value as a society, as a country, in our culture, is what we want to protect. What is sustainable is only what we value. This applies all the more to sustainable development which is planned for long time scales and therefore to go beyond individual sustainable technology solutions as well as economic and political cycles. What we hold in high regard is the result of cultural...

Living with Florida's Atlantic Beaches

A call to live with the coast, as opposed to living at the coast; unless Florida coastal communities conserve beaches and mitigate storm impacts, the future of the beach-based economy is in question.
