The adolescent finds himself in the very difficult position of having to make all these readjustments whilst he has to deal with the subsequent conflicts and anxieties. The earlier passionate mixture of love and hatred that characterizes the attachment and dependency on the parents must now be renounced until the adolescent reaches a point at which it is possible for him to confirm his own identity and find new love relationships. These must neither be based too much on repetition of previous early attachments, nor be entirely and exaggeratedly opposed to them. It goes without saying that none of this can be achieved without much upheaval and experimenting. The step from adolescence to adulthood is complex and involves not only the individual's emotional experience, but also the continuous input, reactions from the world in which he/she lives. It is these interactions that are described and discussed in this book.

This is the first book dedicated to the Contemporary Freudian Tradition. In its introduction, and through its selection of papers, it describes the development and rich diversity of this tradition over recent decades, showing how theory and practice are inseparable in the psychoanalytic treatment of children, adolescents and adults. The book is organized around four major concerns in the Contemporary Freudian Tradition: the nature of the Unconscious and the ways that it manifests itself; the extension of Freud’s theories of development through the work of Anna Freud and later theorists; the body and psychosexuality, including the centrality of bodily experience as it is elaborated over tim...

The Shadow of the "Second Mother" explores why has there been such little interest, in psychology, social history and biography, in the important contribution that ‘second mothers’, such as wet nurses and nannies, have had upon the emotional life of the children they have nursed. For the last three thousand years and throughout most civilisations they have nurtured the children of the privileged, and kept alive the abandoned and unwanted child, and yet there has been a profound silence surrounding the influence they may have had. The author explores the lives of several well-known people who have been wet nursed, such as Michelangelo, Rousseau, Jack London, Nabokov and Klein. She specula...

This chapter, written by a psychiatrist working with people with severe and complex addictions, sets the scene. We are provided with a graphic account of the multiple problems—physical, psychological, social, financial—of someone with severe drug addiction, where sex working and the risks of pregnancy, infection, and assault compound an already challenging presentation. The personal history of trauma and abuse means that the patient requires highly skilled and sensitive management, and adaptations in service provision—such as no morning appointments—that respect the individual’s lifestyle. The conflict for professionals is encapsulated in a brief description of the responses of Van...

'Adolescence - when we are no longer children and have not yet reached adulthood - is a time of much disturbance, change and potential for growth. The adolescent is confronted with a body that stretches, changes and grows in all directions, as does her or his mind: he is no longer who he was.'- Inge Wise from her Introduction Adolescence is a turbulent period of time in life. Adolescents experience hormonal and physical changes that affect their mood and emotions. Psychoanalysis can help them resolve these new and often confusing feelings. In this collection, Inge Wise has gathered together a wide range of papers, dealing with issues such as adolescent violence, suicidal feelings, and addiction. Other papers explore psychoanalytic definitions of adolescence and central psychoanalytic contributions to the understanding of adolescence.

This book is a result of the 2nd International Psychoanalytic Conference: "Aggression: From Fantasy to Action", held in May 2010.It contains papers that were delivered to the conference, together with edited summaries of discussions from the floor that followed each paper. The standard of the papers given was extremely high. What was noticeable from the outset of the conference was the intensity of focus on understanding the origins of aggression and violence, from a psychoanalytic perspective. This intensity persisted throughout the two days, leading to a number of the fascinating discussions that are summarized in this book.

Although there have been many other important contributions to the field of child and adolescent analysis, the major differences in theory and approach still bear the hallmarks of three of the most significant figures in the field: Anna Freud, Melanie Klein and Donald Winnicott. As well as providing an insight into these differences, this volume from the Psychoanalytic Ideas Series also portrays the state of child analysis today, whereby we need to reconcile and combine these differences to reveal a common ground from where we can move forward. This is represented by the sheer diversity of the perspectives in this volume, as they in turn show how they can influence the field of child analysis today.'This book represents an attempt to portray the state of child psychoanalysis in the British Psychoanalytical Society today. It offers a variety of clinical and theoretical perspectives, and attempts to demonstrate how they influence the world of child analysis in this country.
