Dennis Nilsen was one of Britain's most notorious serial killers, jailed for life in 1983 after the murders of 12 men and the attempted murders of many more.Seven years after his conviction, Nilsen began to write his autobiography, and over a period of 18 years he typed 6,000 pages of introspection, reflection, comment and explanation.History of a Drowning Boy - taken exclusively from these astonishing writings - uncovers, for the first time, the motives behind the murders, and delivers a clear understanding of how such horrific events could have happened, tracing the origins back to early childhood. In another first, it provides an insight into his 35 years inside the maximum-security prison...
This fourth issue of Phenomenal Stories features the beginning of the six-part young adult fantasy novel, 'The Book of Power, ' by Richard H. Nilsen with illustrations by Linda Naske and a frontispiece by Richard's daughter, Cara Nilsen. The science fiction end of the world novel, 'After, ' continues and we start two new columns in this issue. The first is a travel log by put-upon reporter/columnist J.D. Hayes-Canell titled Dunces & Dragons. The second column is all about writer by Richard H. Nilsen titled The Write Stuff. The first installment is a general guide to writing, but future parts will go into specifics to help the budding writer write. The editor takes a look at Isaac Asimov's three laws of robotics, and 'Gosh! Wow! A Personal History of the Pulps' continues with part 4. Phenomenal Stories is a modern-day tribute to the science fiction/horror/fantasy/speculative pulp magazines of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940

This volume introduces some basic mathematical models for cell cycle, proliferation, cancer, and cancer therapy. Chapter 1 gives an overview of the modeling of the cell division cycle. Chapter 2 describes how tumor secretes growth factors to form new blood vessels in its vicinity, which provide it with nutrients it needs in order to grow. Chapter 3 explores the process that enables the tumor to invade the neighboring tissue. Chapter 4 models the interaction between a tumor and the immune system. Chapter 5 is concerned with chemotherapy; it uses concepts from control theory to minimize obstacles arising from drug resistance and from cell cycle dynamics. Finally, Chapter 6 reviews mathematical results for various cancer models.
Phenomenal Stories features the start of the 4-part fantasy serial, 'The Red Wizard' by J.D. Hayes-Canell. Sequels are in the works. PS presents the 2nd part of the fantasy seroal, 'The Book of Power, ' by Richard H. Nilsen. The science fiction apocalyptic serial, 'After, ' continues, racing to the dramatic end next month. Dunces & Dragons continues its exhausted and exhaustive adventures of put-upon reporter/columnist J.D. Hayes-Canell. Richard H. Nilsen's column, The Write Stuff, is designed to help novice writers out there to get writing. The first installment was a general guide to writing, but in this issue, Richard starts getting into character. Future parts will go into other specifics to help the budding writer write. The editor takes a look at the science fictional world of today, and 'Gosh! Wow! A Personal History of the Pulps' continues with part 5. Phenomenal Stories is a modern-day tribute to the science fiction/horror/fantasy/speculative pulp magazines of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940
This book provides an introduction to the basic science and technologies for the conversion of biomass (terrestrial and aquatic) into chemicals and fuels, as well as an overview of innovations in the field. The entire value chain for converting raw materials into platform molecules and their transformation into final products are presented in detail. Both cellulosic and oleaginous biomass are considered. The book contains contributions by both academic scientists and industrial technologists so that each topic combines state-of-the-art scientific knowledge with innovative technologies relevant to chemical industries. Selected topics include: Refinery of the future: feedstock, processes, prod...
Providing vital knowledge on the design and synthesis of specific metal-organic framework (MOF) classes as well as their properties, this ready reference summarizes the state of the art in chemistry. Divided into four parts, the first begins with a basic introduction to typical cluster units or coordination geometries and provides examples of recent and advanced MOF structures and applications typical for the respective class. Part II covers recent progress in linker chemistries, while special MOF classes and morphology design are described in Part III. The fourth part deals with advanced characterization techniques, such as NMR, in situ studies, and modelling. A final unique feature is the inclusion of data sheets of commercially available MOFs in the appendix, enabling experts and newcomers to the field to select the appropriate MOF for a desired application. A must-have reference for chemists, materials scientists, and engineers in academia and industry working in the field of catalysis, gas and water purification, energy storage, separation, and sensors.
