This authoritative work represents a broad treatment of the field, including the basic principles of membrane reactors, a comparative study of these and conventional fixed-bed reactors or multi-tube reactors, modeling, industrial applications, and emerging applications -- all based on case studies and model reactions with a stringent mathematical framework. The significant progress made over the last few years in this inherently hot multidisciplinary field is summarized in a competent manner, such that the novice can grasp the elementary concepts, while professionals can familiarize themselves with the latest developments in the area. For the industrial practitioner, this practical book covers all important current and potential future applications.
Future technical systems will be companion systems, competent assistants that provide their functionality in a completely individualized way, adapting to a user’s capabilities, preferences, requirements, and current needs, and taking into account both the emotional state and the situation of the individual user. This book presents the enabling technology for such systems. It introduces a variety of methods and techniques to implement an individualized, adaptive, flexible, and robust behavior for technical systems by means of cognitive processes, including perception, cognition, interaction, planning, and reasoning. The technological developments are complemented by empirical studies from psychological and neurobiological perspectives.
Sometime around 1230, a young woman left her family and traveled to the German city of Magdeburg to devote herself to worship and religious contemplation. Rather than living in a community of holy women, she chose isolation, claiming that this life would bring her closer to God. Even in her lifetime, Mechthild of Magdeburg gained some renown for her extraordinary book of mystical revelations, The Flowing Light of the Godhead, the first such work in the German vernacular. Yet her writings dropped into obscurity after her death, many assume because of her gender. In Mechthild of Magdeburg and Her Book, Sara S. Poor seeks to explain this fate by considering Mechthild's own view of female author...
Cancer immunometabolism is an emerging field exploring cellular bioenergetic alterations in both tumor and immune cells and their impact on tumor immune surveillance and therapy resistance. Multiple concepts have emerged including metabolic competition over nutrients and the secretion of (toxic) metabolic byproducts by cancer cells. Moreover, cancer cells are capable of utilizing and shaping their surrounding microenvironment to their favor, e.g. by reprogramming stroma cells to produce essential nutrients or by providing metabolically relevant signaling molecules to foster the accumulation of immunosuppressive cells. Most importantly, this crosstalk within the tumor microenvironment is mostly multi-directional and a better understanding of the complex interactions may pave the way to improved and/or novel therapeutic strategies to overcome those obstacles.
Silicon-based microelectronics has steadily improved in various performance-to-cost metrics. But after decades of processor scaling, fundamental limitations and considerable new challenges have emerged. The integration of compound semiconductors is the leading candidate to address many of these issues and to continue the relentless pursuit of more
This resource covers all areas of interest for the practicing engineer as well as for the student at various levels and educational institutions. It features the work of authors from all over the world who have contributed their expertise and support the globally working engineer in finding a solution for today‘s mechanical engineering problems. Each subject is discussed in detail and supported by numerous figures and tables.
The index to the Biographical Archive of the Middle Ages makes accessible about 130,000 biographical articles from nearly 200 volumes. The entries contain short biographical information on approx. 95,000 persons from Europe and the Middle East who shaped the cultural development and the religious life during one thousand years.
Fast technological development produces systems of ever-increasing complex ity. The demand for reliable functioning of these systems has become more and more important. Thus, there is a need for highly reliable technical devices and systems, for monitoring and controlling their functioning and for planning maintenance and corrective actions to fulfill given requirements considering eco nomic limitations. These tasks reflect the wide field of engineering activities that are accompa nied by and based on a wide range of stochastical models. The book presents the main contributions to a workshop on Stochastic Models of Reliability, Qual ity, and Safety held in Schierke near Magdeburg, Germany. This workshop was part of a series of meetings that take place every two years organized by the Society of Reliability, Quality and Safety. The basic idea of these workshops is to bring together theorists, applied statisticians, and practitioners to exchange experiences and ideas of common interest. The book contains recent results in reliability and related fields. The presentation aims at making at least a part of the results accessible to engineers.
