Advances in Microwave and Radio Frequency Processing

Prometheus brought fire to mankind Arthur R. von Hippel “Dielectrics and Waves”, 1954 Our contribution? There are only few areas of research and development of a comparable scientific and technological extension as microwave and high frequency processing. “Pr- essing” means not only application of radiation of 300 MHz to 300 GHz f- quency to synthesis, heating or ionisation of matter but also generation, transm- sion and detection of microwave and radio frequency radiation. Microwave and high frequency sources positioned in the orbit are the foun- tion of modern satellite telecommunication systems, gyrotron tubes being pr- ently developed in different countries all over the world wil...

Written at the graduate level, Generation and Application of High Power Microwaves discusses the basic physics of the generation of microwave and radiofrequency waves in the megawatt power range and the application of these ideas to a range of devices such as klystrons, gyrotrons, and free electron lasers. The book also contains chapters covering the transmission of the power through waveguides and the problems associated with mode conversion in transmission lines. The main application area covered is the heating and current drive in tokamaks and other devices for research into controlled nuclear fusion. Other applications of high power microwave technology are not neglected, and among those discussed are multiple charged ion and soft x-ray sources, electron spin resonance spectroscopy, advanced materials processing, millimeter wave radar, and supercolliders.

Electrochemical Performance and Stability of Ba₀.₅Sr₀.₅Co₀.₈Fe₀.₂O₃₋δ for Oxygen Transport Membranes

Mixed ionic-electronic conducting (MIEC) ceramics as oxygen transport membranes (OTMs) can provide high oxygen permeation rates at comparably low energy demands. For this purpose, Ba?.?Sr?.?Co?.?Fe?.?O??? (BSCF) shows the best performance under ideal operating conditions. Thermal and chemical stability investigations, electrical behavior ?(T,pO?,t), and oxygen exchange parameter extraction by means of electrical conductivity relaxation resulted in a far better understanding of the BSCF system.

AlGaN/GaN-HEMT power amplifiers with optimized power-added efficiency for X-band applications

This work has arisen out of the strong demand for a superior power-added efficiency (PAE) of AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) high-power amplifiers (HPAs) that are part of any advanced wireless multifunctional RF-system with limited prime energy. Different concepts and approaches on device and design level for PAE improvements are analyzed, e.g. structural and layout changes of the GaN transistor and advanced circuit design techniques for PAE improvements of GaN HEMT HPAs.

Following in the footsteps of its popular predecessors, High Power Microwaves, Fourth Edition continues to provide a wide-angle, integrated view of the field of high power microwaves (HPMs). This fourth edition includes significant updates in every chapter as well as a new chapter on High Power Amplifiers. Written by a range of experimentalists, theorists, and applied theorists, the book offers complementary perspectives on different source types. The authors address: How HPM relates historically and technically to the conventional microwave field The possible applications for HPM and the key criteria that HPM devices have to meet in order to be applied How high power sources work, including...

Design and Experimental Investigation of a Second Harmonic 20 kW Class 28 GHz Gyrotron for Evaluation of New Emitter Technologies

Gyrotrons are high-power mm-wave tubes. Here, the design, construction and experimental investigation of a 20 kW, 28 GHz gyrotron (2nd harmonic) are reported. This tube was designed to evaluate new emitters for future highly efficient and reliable fusion gyrotrons and for material processing applications. Following experimental results have been achieved in CW operation: 22.5 kW output power at 23.4 kV electron beam voltage and 2.23 A beam current with the world record efficiency of 43 %.

Surface wave driven molecular low pressure plasmas for general lighting

Nowadays, compact fluorescent lamps are widely-used in general lighting applications. However, they still struggle with acceptance problems due to the hazardous mercury, which serves as the radiant component inside the lamp. The presented work deals with the development of a mercury-free, electrodeless, low pressure plasma based on a molecular filling and driven by microwaves, which may represent a viable alternative to the conventional CFLs.
