Looking at the experiences of women in early modern Portugal in the context of crime and forgiveness, this study demonstrates the extent to which judicial and quasi-judicial records can be used to examine the implications of crime in women’s lives, whether as victims or culprits. O discurso oficial sobre o 25 de Abril de 1974 tem apresentado esta data como o momento fundador da democracia em Portugal. No entanto, a democracia apenas se pode considerar verdadeiramente instituída em 25 de Abril de 1976, com a entrada em vigor da actual Constituição. Até lá o país viveu sob tutela militar, que se caracterizou pela violação constante dos direitos fundamentais dos cidadãos, com prisões sem culpa formada, ausência de «habeas corpus», saneamento de funcionários, sequestro de empresários, e contestação de decisões judiciais. Em 1975 Portugal esteve à beira da guerra civil, o que só viria a ser travado em 25 de Novembro desse ano, uma data que hoje muitos se recusam a comemorar. Nesta obra pretendemos dar a conhecer o que efectivamente se passou nos dois anos que durou o processo revolucionário no nosso país, no intuito de contribuir para um verdadeiro debate sobre um período histórico muito próximo, mas que não é detalhadamente conhecido pelas gerações mais novas.
