XploRe — Learning Guide

It is generally accepted that training in statistics must include some exposure to the mechanics of computational statistics. This learning guide is intended for beginners in computer-aided statistical data analysis. The prerequisites for XploRe - the statistical computing environment - are an introductory course in statistics or mathematics. The reader of this book should be familiar with basic elements of matrix algebra and the use of HTML browsers. This guide is designed to help students to XploRe their data, to learn (via data interaction) about statistical methods and to disseminate their findings via the HTML outlet. The XploRe APSS (Auto Pilot Support System) is a powerful tool for fi...

Money and Faith

Talking about money in a personal way remains more of a taboo than sex or politics. This seems odd within a Christian context, since Jesus addressed topics of money, poverty, and wealth more than any other concerns. For many, money becomes an idol; we see it in our own culture as we pursue economic growth no matter the cost to the overall well-being of God’s creation. When that happens, “enough” is always more than we have right now, and scarcity becomes the lens through which we see the world. On a personal level, this book opens up issues of scarcity and abundance, idolatry and freedom; on a societal level, it invites exploration of greater equity and sustainability. On both levels, ...

Modeling and Using Context

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 5th International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Modeling and Using Context, CONTEXT 2005, held in Paris, France in July 2005. The 42 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 120 submissions. The papers presented deal with the interdisciplinary topic of modeling and using context from various points of view, ranging through cognitive science, formal logic, artifical intelligence, computational intelligence, philosophical and psychological aspects, and information processing. Highly general philosophical and theoretical issues are complemented by specific applications in various fields.

Conversations with Wendell Berry

"Whether we know it or not, whether we want to be or not, we are members of one another." Since 1960, Wendell Berry (b. 1934) has produced one of the most substantial and consistently thematic bodies of work of any modern American writer. In more than fifty books in various genres-novels, short stories, poems, and essays-he has celebrated a life lived in close communion with neighbors and the earth and has addressed many of our most urgent cultural maladies. His collections of essays urge us to think and act responsibly as members of a community-both human and natural. Volumes of his poems seek to wed us to nature and realign our vision with its mysteries. His growing Port William cycle of n...

COMPSTAT 2004 - Proceedings in Computational Statistics

Statistical computing provides the link between statistical theory and applied statistics. The content of the book covers all aspects of this link, from the development and implementation of new statistical ideas to user experiences and software evaluation. The proceedings should appeal to anyone working in statistics and using computers, whether in universities, industrial companies, government agencies, research institutes or as software developers

African Renaissance and Discourse Ownership in the Information Age

The information revolution is transforming the world, especially the industrialised world. But what are its implications for the implementation of an African renaissance? Based on a Foucaultian analytical framework this book argues that the Internet has become a major Western instrument of domination in Africa. By extending the reach of Western hegemonic discourses, the Internet adds another dimension to Western discursive power. However, by allowing for the active participation in the process of naming the world, the Internet also affords unprecedented means of transcending dependency.

Machine learning is a relatively new field, without a unanimous definition. In many ways, actuaries have been machine learners. In both pricing and reserving, but also more recently in capital modelling, actuaries have combined statistical methodology with a deep understanding of the problem at hand and how any solution may affect the company and its customers. One aspect that has, perhaps, not been so well developed among actuaries is validation. Discussions among actuaries’ “preferred methods” were often without solid scientific arguments, including validation of the case at hand. Through this collection, we aim to promote a good practice of machine learning in insurance, considering the following three key issues: a) who is the client, or sponsor, or otherwise interested real-life target of the study? b) The reason for working with a particular data set and a clarification of the available extra knowledge, that we also call prior knowledge, besides the data set alone. c) A mathematical statistical argument for the validation procedure.

Measuring Risk in Complex Stochastic Systems

Complex dynamic processes of life and sciences generate risks that have to be taken. The need for clear and distinctive definitions of different kinds of risks, adequate methods and parsimonious models is obvious. The identification of important risk factors and the quantification of risk stemming from an interplay between many risk factors is a prerequisite for mastering the challenges of risk perception, analysis and management successfully. The increasing complexity of stochastic systems, especially in finance, have catalysed the use of advanced statistical methods for these tasks. The methodological approach to solving risk management tasks may, however, be undertaken from many different...

Handbook of Computational Statistics

The Handbook of Computational Statistics: Concepts and Methodology is divided into four parts. It begins with an overview over the field of Computational Statistics. The second part presents several topics in the supporting field of statistical computing. Emphasis is placed on the need of fast and accurate numerical algorithms and it discusses some of the basic methodologies for transformation, data base handling and graphics treatment. The third part focuses on statistical methodology. Special attention is given to smoothing, iterative procedures, simulation and visualization of multivariate data. Finally a set of selected applications like Bioinformatics, Medical Imaging, Finance and Network Intrusion Detection highlight the usefulness of computational statistics.

Smoothing and Regression

A comprehensive introduction to a wide variety of univariate and multivariate smoothing techniques for regression Smoothing and Regression: Approaches, Computation, and Application bridges the many gaps that exist among competing univariate and multivariate smoothing techniques. It introduces, describes, and in some cases compares a large number of the latest and most advanced techniques for regression modeling. Unlike many other volumes on this topic, which are highly technical and specialized, this book discusses all methods in light of both computational efficiency and their applicability for real data analysis. Using examples of applications from the biosciences, environmental sciences, ...
