Pemphigus and pemphigoid diseases: in memoriam Detlef Zillikens

Pemphigus and pemphigoid diseases are a heterogenous group of autoimmune blistering disorders (AIBD) characterized by tissue-bound and circulating autoantibodies against structural proteins of the desmosome and basement membrane zone of the skin and orifice-close mucosal tissues. While strong evidence has been provided that autoantibodies in AIBD are pathogenic, the exact mechanisms of how blister formation is mediated is very different between pemphigus and pemphigoid disorders and yet incompletely understood. Additionally, target antigens for the major AIBDs have already been identified on the molecular level. In contrast, diagnostic assays are not yet available for all autoantibody specif...

Maxims and Reflections (Ricordi)

Review: "Unlike Machiavelli-inveterate dreamer and cynic-Guicciardini's mind is remarkable for the balance and masterly coolness of its judgment."-Federico Chabod "In the history of Renaissance thought, Guicciardini's Ricordi occupy a place of singular importance. Few works of the sixteenth century allow us so penetrating an insight into the views and sentiments of its author as these reflections of the great Italian historian. . . . Like Machiavelli's Prince, the Ricordi form one of the outstanding documents of a time of crisis and transition; but unlike the Prince, they range over a wide field of private as well as public life. In doing so, they revel the man as well as the political theorist."-Nicolai Rubenstein, from the Introduction.

Stone in Architecture

The readers of the first two editions of Stone: Properties, Durabi lity in Man's Environment, were mostly architects, restoration architects of buildings and monuments in natural stone, profes sionals who sought basic technical information for non-geologists. The increasing awareness of rapidly decaying monuments and their rescue from loss to future generations have urged this writer to update the 1973 and 1975 editions, now unavailable and out of print. Due to the 20-year-Iong interval, extensive updating was necessary to produce this new book. The present edition concentrates on the natural material stone, as building stone, dimension stone, architectural stone, and decorative field stones...

The 'invisible masterpiece' is an unattainable ideal, a work into which a dream of absolute art is incorporated but can never be realized. By means of this metaphor borrowed from Balzac, Hans Belting shows the variety of ways in which the status and meaning of the masterpiece have been elevated and denigrated since the early nineteenth century. The history of the masterpiece coincided with the history of the public museum. Leonardo's Mona Lisa and other celebrated paintings preoccupied later artists, who felt burdened by the one-time cult of the masterpiece as it had been transformed into the cult of visible works of art. Following Duchamp, artists became increasingly resistant to the notion of the masterpiece. Beginning in the 1960s, Conceptual and Minimal artists concentrated on ephemeral forms and manufactured multiple copies in order to reject the outmoded status of the one-off masterpiece and the art market that fed off it. The Invisible Masterpiecereveals works, events and individuals in the history of Western art in a wholly novel way.

Significant areas covered in the book include angiogenesis, neoplasias, hypertension, shock, ischemia/reperfusion, diabetes, immunologic injury, and thermal injury. It also covers the effects of aging and environmental factors on the microcirculation-topics not often examined in depth. More than 80 figures and tables illustrate key concepts throughout the book.
