Multicellular organisms must be able to adapt to cellular events to accommodate prevailing conditions. Sensory-response circuits operate by making use of a phosphorylation control mechanism known as the "two-component system." Sections include: Computational Analyses of Sequences and Sequence Alignments Biochemical and Genetic Assays of Individual Components of Signaling Systems Physiological Assays and Readouts - Presents detailed protocols - Includes troubleshooting tips

Supporting initiation, development and resolution of appropriate immune responses is key to survival. Many nutrients and dietary components have been purported to have a role in supporting optimal immune function. This is vital throughout the life course, from the development and programming of the immune system in early life, to supporting immunity and reducing chronic inflammation in older people. In this special issue of Nutrients, we examine the evidence for the role of diet and dietary components in promoting protective immunity.

Function and Control of the Spx-Family of Proteins Within the Bacterial Stress Response

This SpringerBrief on Spx reviews the investigations that led to the discovery of Spx and its orthologs and ties together the results of various studies that have explored the function and control of spx in Gram-positive organisms. Spx of Bacillus subtilis has been extensively studied, but very little has been published about it. This book incorporates a number of studies that have been conducted in other Gram positive bacteria, which examined the role of Spx orthologs in stress response, bacterial development and virulence. The book contains an overview that will introduce the protein and its orthologous forms, its association with RNA polymerase, the species of Gram-positive bacteria in which it is found, and the conditions in which it is abundant and active. Spx is a member of a large group of proteins belonging to the ArsC/Spx protein family, so the review touches upon the bioinformatic support for the protein family composition and its meaning with regard to protein structure/function.

Strict and Facultative Anaerobes: Medical and Environmental Aspects reviews all aspects of anaerobic bacteria, highlighting their environmental and medical importance. The first three chapters focus on taxonomy, anaerobic metabolism and the genetic regulation of anaerobic processes in strict and facultative anaerobes. The next section includes an examination of the physiological traits of anaerobic bacteria that enable them to be beneficial in one situation but hazardous to human and animal health in others. Other topics include the anaerobic nature of infections, latency, anaerobic biofilms, and toxin production. The final section reviews iron, selenate, and arsenate reduction, as well as oxidation of halogenated organics, ammonium oxidation, and acetogenesis. This important book provides detailed coverage of the wide-ranging capabilities of anaerobic bacteria. It examines their basic biology and chemistry, medical importance, and applications in biotechnology and environmental science. It is an essential reference for everyone interested in anaerobic bacteria, environmental biology, medical microbiology, and industrial bacteriology.
