Jazz & the Germans
Many commentators have observed that the influence of jazz and related popular musics on musical practice beyond American borders should be considered one of the most dynamic developments of the twentieth century. This collection of essays concentrates on American influences in Germany, where such unlikely "foreign" elements enjoyed a remarkable vogue for much of the past century, not only in the realm of popular culture but in the realm of the arts as well. Against the tumultuous social and political upheavals of modern Germany there evolved a fascinating musical sound track that introduced German musicians and their public to ragtime, spirituals, the blues, later dance music, and jazz with resulting opportunities for imitation and assimilation. In this volume American scholars from various academic perspectives are joined by German musician-scholars.
Foundations of Animal Behavior
Beginning with Darwin's work in the 1870s, Foundations of Animal Behavior selects the most important works from the discipline's first hundred years—forty-four classic papers—and presents them in facsimile, tracing the development of the field. These papers are classics because they either founded a line of investigation, established a basic method, or provided a new approach to an important research question. The papers are divided into six sections, each introduced by prominent researchers. Sections one and two cover the origins and history of the field and the emergence of basic methods and approaches. Five Notes of the Raga
Five Notes of the Raga is about Indian music and Indian History. This short story that gives the book its name is an imagined encounter between two great personages of the sixteenth century Indian Bhakti movement: the blind musician Surdas and the great Mughal Emperor Akbar. There follows five musical plays staged in London, including the most recently staged Phool Walon ki Saira flower sellers procession that starts from a Hindu temple and ends at a Muslim shrine. Kavita K2k recounts Indian poetryancient and modern. Sheydiner Doojon is about the two bards of BengalTagore and Nazrul. T3 tells the time with timeless Indian Ragas and Tagore melodies. Lastly, Gulbagicha displays the repertoire of Nazruls creativity. The book ends with a few of Dasguptas poems.
