This publication, which is wholly dedicated to pancreatic cancer, presents an overview on all important aspects of the disease. The topics of the reviews range from epidemiology, pathology, imaging, surgery and palliative treatment to the prevention of pancreatic cancer. The original paper presents the illuminating results from a study which investigated the factors and laboratory parameters determining survival in pancreatic carcinoma as well as the possibility of using this specific data as prognostic parameters for an early diagnosis of the disease. Professionals involved in the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer will appreciate this compact educational update.
Most patients suffering from pancreatic diseases are managed bygeneral internists, gastroenterologists and/or surgeons innon-specialized centers. Basic and clinical research inpancreatology is continuously leading to changes in the managementof pancreatic diseases, but these advances are applied to theclinical practice almost exclusively in specialized centers byspecialized groups. The books and journals currently available are directed atpancreatologists and the information does not reach most generalclinicians and surgeons who treat patients suffering frompancreatic diseases. The aim of this book is to provide practisinggastroenterologists and surgeons with clear information regardingthe diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic diseases.
Basic research discusses the implication of pancreatic stress protein in acute pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer and their possible role as therapeutic targets. Also, very original results show the unexpected role of lipids as mediators during acute pancreatitis. Gene screening strategies allow the detection of the genes responsbile for gemcitabine resistance of pancreatic cancer cells. They lead to the selection of several target genes, in order to suppress the resistance of cells to gemcitabine treatment. The mechanism by which tetrahydrocannabinol is anti-tumoral in pancreatic cancer cells is presented and the use of THC as a promising new therapeutic agent is discussed. Genetic data are shown concerning hundreds of families with hereditary chronic pancreatitis and their possible role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Another very original study addresses the prevention and treatment of pancreatic diseases with diat. In clinical research, convincing data about the use of endoscopic sphicterotomy in the management of acute bilary pancreatitis is presented, based on the experience of a Center highly specialized in pancreatic diseases.
During the past five years, evidence based medicine has become the sine qua non of clinical practice. Thus, the rise of evidence-based medicine has re-emphasised the need for high quality evidence that management interventions will actually benefit our patients. The authors have tried to explore some of these areas in the European Association of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Postgraduate Course held in Birmingham, October 1997.
Nutritional Oncology: Nutrition in Cancer Prevention, Treatment, and Survivorship presents evidence-based approaches to the study and application of nutrition in all phases of cancer including prevention, treatment, and survivorship. There is a long history of interest in the role of nutrition in cancer but only in the last 50 years has this interdisciplinary field developed scientific evidence from a combination of population studies, basic research, and clinical studies. Precision oncology, targeted therapies and immunonutrition have led to advances in cancer treatment and prevention. Highlighting insights from Precision Oncology and Precision Nutrition to improve cancer prevention, treatm...
This book is based on the latest comprehensive data about molecular mechanism of acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. The diagnostic techniques including histology, radiology, sonography etc. are based on the sensitivity and specificity of the respective methods. Special focus is given to the indication and contraindication to surgical techniques. The book contains specific treatment modality and results for the first time after long-term outcome evaluation. There is detailed description of diagnosis and treatment, and the book is abundantly illustrated with approximately 300 color illustrations.

Also covered in detail are issues of tumor recurrence and long-term outcome of treatment. Brought to you by highly skilled national and international leaders in the specialty and an experienced editor team, this is an invaluable guide to practicing gastroenterologists and surgeons in the hospital and clinical environment, as well as oncologists and endocrinologists managing patients with pancreatic tumorous lesions.
Rectal cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers world-wide. It is also a paradigm for multimodal management, as the combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy is often necessary to achieve the optimal outcome. Recently, international experts met in Heidelberg, Germany to discuss the latest developments in the management of rectal cancer, including the anatomic and pathologic basis, staging tools, surgical concepts including fast-track surgery and laparoscopic resection, functional outcome after surgery and the role of radio- and chemotherapy. This monograph summarizes this meeting and gives an extensive overview of the current concepts in management of rectal cancer.
Clem Imrie and Colin Johnson This book stems from an unusual meeting held in The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in March 2007. Enthusiastic doctors in the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic diseases were arranged in small groups to discuss specific unsolved/partially clinical problems and suggest the way forward. In some instances, the recommendations were initial improved longitudinal studies, while in others better double-blind randomized st- ies. The recommendations were then presented on the second day before the total 40 plus participants who added their input. Finally, the mechanics of initiating the proposals were arranged. The editors are most thankful to the ...
